Inconsistency in GPS coordinates between firmwares

All,

Our team has noticed some GPS inconsistencies between firmware versions 2.048 and 2.049. We had issues completing missions using 2.049. Before the upgrade, we were completing missions at 2meter accuracy with tight turns and fast speeds. We were also getting visual confirmation of the waypoints being captured using APM.

After the upgrade, we began noticing some drift in our missions. While the missions were being flown in approximate patterns, the coordinates were not being visually confirmed. Also, the bird would frequently get "lost" and not fly directly to the waypoint; but instead it would overshoot and wander around the waypoint.

We tested our hypothesis of firmware drift. Basically, put the bird in a designated location, note GPS and repeat with the other firmware (for more, see issue 280). We saw that the 2.049 firmware had at least a 5meter shift.

Has anybody else noted problems?

  • Hmmm... funny you should ask. I have noticed shifting in my coordinates as well (weird stuff like my Google Earth plots show me a bit north of where I know I was) and ordered a new gps this week from the DIYStore so I could compare the two compatible types. I am currently using the GS407 U-Blox5 and am trying to see how the Mediatek will work for me.
