Interface home-built hardware/software with ArduPilot

Hi,

I am interested in interfacing an Arduino/Xbee radio module I’ve build onto a flying platform.  Has anyone done something similar before?  I’d like to be able to relay messages between these radios that has the capability to interrupt a pre-built mission plan. 

Is there any good documentation on how to interface some home-built hardware/software with the auto pilot (multi-rotor)? 

Any information would be appreciated.  Thanks.
