Is there any control board that can trim by itself?

Hi, I have a Game of Drones kit that I have fully assembled but I can't get the drone in the air. It always just flies off course and I have never been able to make it hover. I was wondering if there is such a thing as a control board that can trim the quadcopter by itself? Thanks!

  • Pixhawk/APM  Autotune dude.

  • I got this from the supplier yesterday :-)

    Hello tommy,

Yes that flight control board will support ArduPlane, ArduCopter or ArduRover.  It will run any ArduPilot firmware.

    Thanks for the email,

  • Hi Tommy,

    That is a good question.

The PX4 Mini (not Pixhawk Mini as I incorrectly stated above) is a port compatible hardware clone of the Pixhawk.

Except it has less output PWM ports so less controls available.

It is targeted at quadcopters, but has 8 PWM outputs so ostensibly could control an octo (and nothing else)

It has been tested and found/made compatible with Arducopter, but I do not know if anyone has tried Arduplane.

Seems like if stock Arducopter works, Arduplane ought to as well, although my understanding is that there are a few tweaks to Arducopter for the Mini, so no guarantee.

Really need to get Tridge to weigh in on this.

    Best,

    Gary

  • Web page says: "Fully compatible with the latest version of ArduCopter..." Does it mean that it doesn't support Arduplane?

    Hi Justin,

Pixhawk Mini is probably the cheapest tested known working Pixhawk clone right now.

But you will need to have a GPS too I believe for autotune to function.

I started with the original KK several years ago, great to learn how to fly on.

You can auto trim (not tune your copter) using the following http://ardupilot.org/copter/docs/autotrim.html?highlight=autotrim

To be honest, if it's setup right, you probably won't need to... And if you are on a budget an APM 2.6 HW based on the atmel chips will fly that frame just fine...

What other boards can ArduPilot run on? Any less expensive than the Pixhawk?

  • Hi Justice,

In case the above two comments are confusing to you.

Yes there is a flight controller board that can tune itself.

The Pixhawk (or its various clones) running the ArduPilot firmware can tune itself.

Autotune does require that you set it to autotune mode and then monitor it while it goes through various flight maneuvers to adjust all of it's values.

The link (supplied by Chris) takes you to the Ardupilot autotune procedure in the Ardupilot wiki.

  • No, Chris, Pixhawk doesn't have an autotune feature because Pixhawk is just a piece of hardware. ArduPilot (that can run in many boards, including Pixhawk) has an autotune feature.

  • 3D Robotics

Yes, Pixhawk has an autotune feature.
