Issue with Arducopter 2.5 and RTL

I have a TBS Discovery with APM 2.5. I have been flying the copter without any issues for the past day. I went to the field and started it up. I let the GPS lock prior to flying it. I took off in Stabilize mode and flew about 30-45 feet away and then engaged RTL. The copter did exactly what it should and returned and landed. I again wanted to test it. This time I took off to the end of the field rather briskly and switched to RTL. This time the copters listed hard to one side and stated to fly in the wrong direction. I took control and saved it. I returned on my own. I then flew it 30-45 feet again and RTL'd this time it worked. The next time same listing and violent behavior.

Any ideas? I am new to quads and the apm. Thanks inadvance.

  • I am having the same problem... how did you fix it?

  • Did you ever figure this out? I have a copter that just will not RTL/Loiter with any stability. The last RTL I tried - the copter ended up tumbling out of a tree. It went south when RTL was north. This is all with the uBlox gps, unfortunately im still using the internal compass.

  • Zachary,

I had a look at your logs.
First of all the compass offsets are off scale (ideal between -150 and 150)

    Yours are -6072 / 28,8 / 5806,18

I suggest to do a manual calibration of the compass.

Next I would reposition the APM in the center of the frame rather then on the side and also on top of the CoT point which is about between the arm in the back (on the letters SCO)

Push the battery as far as possible to the front and add some weight in front to compensate in order to have a nice balance.

Otherwise the rear motors will have to push more to compensate for the extra weight and will not have any power to spare.

On my TBS I added some weight in front when I'm not flying with my GoPro to balance out my 3300mA/4s battery.

    Regards

  • The MediaTek GPS Is bad. I had the exact same issue! RTL was flying away. Upgraded to uBlox and never  missed a beat. 100/100 successful RTLs

There are multiple threads on here saying the exact same thing

  • Here is a photo of the layout of my copter. Are there changes I should make?

  • I am using 2.9.1b. I tired to download logs but I think I am doing it wrong. Any advice as where to find a guide to do that. I did not power cycle but I did disarm and arm during the flight.

I have been reading about issues with the compass. Do you all recommend trying 3.0rc firmware which is supposed to take care of the compass issues?

I will also try to disable the learn feature of the compass today and try it again.

Any advice on the easiest way to program the mag compass as I only have USB for connection?

What version of firmware are you using?
Do you have any logs you can post?
Are you power cycling between flights?
Are you disarming and rearming between flights?
