Measurement of polars

Hi,

I was thinking of using the APM to measure the aerodynamic properties of an airplane (polars). Essentially the APM is going to be used as a sensor, but also as an aid to follow well defined flight paths. It would be great to be able to program "waypoints" to create reliable measurements. In principle a measurements would be as follows:

1) climb to a certain height at position A
2) motor off
3) trimm to a specific glide path angle
4) glide to position B
5) jump to 1) and trimm to another path angle

The thing is that the APM should accept the glide situation (speed and height at point B depends on trimm position).  Essentially the APM should just keep heading.

Has anybody done something similar?

Cheers,

Andres

I started to look at the code of APM. It seems to me that a new flight mode would have to be programmed. I would not mind to do that, but maybe someone has done something similar or maybe has some good ideas on how to implement this. I ordered some days ago my APM and am waiting for it to arrive.

The airframe I'm going to use is this one:

I exchanged, however, the microtrubine by an electric motor ;) I'm really looking forward to see how the APM performs on this types of airframes.

    Cheers,
