MediaTek MT3329's basic adapter.

I have a question regarding the basic adapter that comes with the MT3329 GPS. It does mention that the adapter accepts 5V as an operating voltage while the GPS could accept 3.2V to 5V. My question is: what is the maximum voltage that can be supplied through the adapter as it has a voltage regulator but without indicating the maximum input value. This necessary for me to be able to choose either to use 7.4V Lipo battery or to use a 3.7V Lipo battery. I prefer the later since I am short on space.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • That adapter is for a 5V power supply.  You need to power it with 5V.

Looking at the eagle file the regulator is not properly specified and they're using their own made up component library.  The max voltage could be anywhere from 5.5-16V depending on what part they actually used.  Voltage drop out is usually around 0.2-0.28V.

So you really have no way of knowing what you can get away with voltage wise.  You can probably use the 3.7V battery, but the 7.4 would most likely burn out your regulator.
