Hi everybody

I’m planning the build of a X8 wing.

Has anybody successfully tried using a double split rudder feature on the ArduPilot Mega?

As a yaw control feature I’m thinking of modifying the winglets of my X8 wing. My intention is to increase drag on the wingtip that is leading. Of course this would only be feasible by having the APM assist in this matter.

So each winglet will have a part of it functioning as a rudder that only works outwards. If there is yaw to the left, the rudder on the right winglet must extend outward, creating more drag counteracting the unwanted yaw. The rudder on the left winglet does nothing, as long as there is no yaw to the right. So, split rudder operation, controlled by APM, contributing to unwanted yaw.

Does anyone have any constructive thoughts on this matter?

  • Sorry for the dumb question, but what is wrong with having  both winglet rudders turning both ways instead of just outwards ? Then you could simply have a Y connection to both servos from the APM rudder. Is there any flying advantage to using the system you describe ?
