Poor FPV range, Phantom 2/Black Pearl/Cloverleaf

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've researched this a little bit but unsure what to look at next. If this comes across as a typically rookie question, I apologize.

I'm currently using:

- DJI Phantom 2
- GoPro4 on a Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal

- Flysight Black Pearl RC801 FPV screen

- DJI Mini IOSD

- Flysight 5.8Ghz cloverleaf antenna kit

The range of my FPV is horrible. See attached.

- fpv01: Shows the screen with the drone close to me (~21m/70ft). Image quality is good.

- fpv02: Shows the drone a little farther away (~50m/162ft). Image quality is degraded.

- fpv03: Shows the drone shortly after the previous image (around 60m/195ft). Image is not usable.

Things I have considered:

- The wifi on the GoPro is off

- A wifi site survey showed no competing 5 ghz signals

What else can I look at to increase my range? These antenna should be capable of a much greater distance..

Thanks for your advice in advance.

  • Martin,

Thanks for your reply. I foolishly forgot to add details of the transmitter:

Flysight 5.8 Ghz 32 channels 400mw Video Transmitter

Yes the RX/TX are marked on the antennas and I have them installed as you mentioned (TX on the transmitter, RX on the Black Pearl)

    • What was the range like with the stock antennas before you changed to the cloverleafs, did you notice an improvement in range when you changed them.

Maybe you have a faulty connection in one of the new cloverleafs, have you tried swapping about with the stock ones.

      • Perfectly valid question. I don't think I ever used the stock antenna since I got everything up front. I'll track down my stock antennas, do some testing, and let you know.

        Thanks,

        Peter

  • Hi Peter,

What video transmitter are you using?

Are the antennas marked RX and TX and do you have the the RX on the Black Pearl and Tx on the transmitter on the Phantom.
