Room for expansion with Groundstation kit

I'm looking at picking up the DIY Drones groundstation kit (https://store.diydrones.com/ArduStation_p/de-0001-01.htm), but I was wondering if the kit has any room for expansion built in (or will I have to solder directly to the socket pins for the Arduino). I'm looking to add a few extra sensors to the board, such as a GPS beacon (for the location of the ground station), and be able to communicate this info to the copter. Would this expansion be possible with the groundstation kit or should I look at building something from scratch instead?

  • If you are able to make a pcb you might want to try Colin's ground station

  • I wouldn't recommend it for you application because it only has one serial port and would be very difficult impossible to monitor the GPS and the telemetry from the plane. I would get a ArduinoMega from sparkfun and one of their serial LCD displays. You could add all the buttons you could think of and even use one of the 4 serial ports for a sd card data logger board and you can record all the telemetry, and a usb port. I did the data logger with the Ardustation, but I had to put in a mutiplexer to switch between the sd card and the Xbee. It worked fine. I built it before the Ardumega came out. The serial LCD boards let you change the back-light brightness with serial commands.
