After spending many hours troubleshooting and waiting days for responses from support I finally took back my first Solo the was eventually deemed defective by 3DR for a number of issues. It took another 2.5hrs at the retailer to perform the exchange and a 5 day wait with a 3 hour commute to pick up Solo #2 at the nearest retailer with inventory.

I will say that I was quite excited when unboxing #2 as the whole process was extremely smooth compare the previous one.  in less then 10 minutes #2 was updated to 1.05 and fully calibrated.  It had 12-13 satelites registered and locked in seconds from startup.  #1 took a minimum of 4-5 minutes if I was lucky to lock 6 for auto fly. Not to mention the controller showed full bars for solo connectivity and telemtry readings in the app were dead on.  

With such good flight conditions before packing up the kids in the car to head over the field I decided to take #2 up and down just to confirm flight first.  here is #2's first flight video 10 mins from coming out of the box.

I will be on my 3rd one shortly, there are folks with fully functional Solo's, my neighbor was lucky enough to get one, I am on a quest. I early adopt many technologies often before they are released, my primary career is in R&D of emerging tech for fortune 500.  I am very educated consumer and many months of research went in prior to me making this decision although I will admit my inner tech 

I think what drew me in was the fact that 3DR was confident enough to put a $1000 price tag on the RTF and placed it in a big box store (BB).  If the launch was kept to 3DR's on-line store and on hobby store's I probably would have held off until they marketed it to the everyday consumer.   Only because I do not have the time Solo has required of me up until this point, but at this price point I can not justify leaving it broken in the box until I can deal with it.  Based on my experience to this point, I feel like the RTF would be better suited on the shelves of a Brookestone.

I can only hope my 3rd Solo which I was told will arrive in 3 weeks, will truly be RTF for more then a minute...until then my cheerson cx-10 will make due.

I have already taken back for the retailer to RMA.  I did take it apart and put it all back together and was able to get it back to it's original physical state, minus the 3 broken props.  This allowed me to reinsert the battery and power it up where complete the startup with out error's according to the LED's(2 white, 2 red), unfortunately the WiFi never came back on for the controller to see it.  Even after a factory reset.

I can assure that at the very least one motor stopped if not more.  As it descended I could see props not in motion and if you listen closely in the video you will will hear them cut off. It happened so fast but it looked like just one active prop just before making contact with the ground.  The center of all of the props were tightly attached to the motor pods and all pieces were located at the scene of the crash.  

0 for 2, even if my 3rd one functions as advertised still 66% fail rate according to my test, I'm pretty sure that would qualify for whatever is after 'A lot'.

 I would like to see how many have been release to consumers to this point.  as I know a few folks that have had pre-order from the beginning and still haven't seen theirs.  I was one of them until a retailer 2 hours away received one in their inventory. 

I get your point. Its sort of embarrassing  though when you have 3dr reps demonstrating and they have to stomp the copter to get it to stay down. Or it almost injures a bystander and saying the wind caught it. Not good pr

Please read before making such statements. The woman was not a 3DR rep as I recall, but even if she was, she didn't know what she was doing. The indoor occurrence is petty nitpicking. I don't think you are an experienced RC flyer, no offense.

Most of these crashes are taken out of context. Many of them are user error, and many others we’ve resolved already—to great satisfaction of the owners, too. For instance, the NAB “crash” was indoors, when Solo was flying with optical flow and no GPS—when Solo ran low on battery, it switched automatically into RTL mode, which is GPS based. But because GPS wasn’t on, it wandered and the pilot stopped it. The outdoor 3DR event was user error—she was flying “nose-in” and got disoriented. We’ve published flight logs to back all of this up. But please: Remember to always fly Solo in an open area clear of structures that might interfere with GPS reception. And if you’re a new user, please read the manual and proceed carefully to get a feel for flying. Thanks for sharing! But let’s shed some light on what’s really going on here.

There are people at RCG posting flat out lies about 3DR, and there are DJI employees fomenting them. That reflects badly on DJI and I for one will never buy any of their products, even though 3-4 weeks ago I recommended a friend not to buy the Solo because I felt it was too new/buggy and to get a P3. Instead I bought a Solo to see for myself if it was as bad as some of these people were saying. I then found out about the serious flaw in the P3 frame and suggested my friend not buy the P3. After a few exchanges with the DJI employees, I would have suggested the same just for their antics.  My friend has been flying nitro planes and helis longer than me (no helis) and is very particular about RC stuff.

It is very bad business ethics to encourage your employees to engage in slimy tactics as they are doing on an almost daily basis. Oh yes, their employers know.

If a P3 flies away or dives into a lake (Phantoms seem to like lake bottoms), you are on your own. If a Solo flies away, the logs are in the controller and they go to 3DR.

 

Yes, the fan boyz and their motives are easy to spot, right John....It's clear you ignore the bad and have a lot of rainbow paint on hand. I returned my Solo without even flying it just because of the bad taste the 3DR paid and free trolls left in my mouth.

Are you 100% sure that DJI employees are doing that? Im sure as much as I slammed the solo and talked about the amazing inspire and P3, peeps here thought I was a DJI employee...no Im just and outspoken Ass that switched back to DJI products. Now that I have been able to fly both 3dr and DJI products, I must say that there is not a perfect ship. There are some of the inspire/ p3 pilots post of fly aways, and the 3dr pilots post fly aways as well. Its just the nature of this hobby and hopefully in the future there will be a perfect drone that doesnt fly away. Hell I had a fly away with my inspire last week but was able to gain control in ATTI mode! 2900.00 butt puckering moment!!! Lets all have fun with the hobby and realize that neither company is better than the other and grasp the idea that it is just a  matter of time that we will have a fly away or some kind of  catistrophic failure bringing down our investment into a pile of plastic and carbon fiber.

Straw man comment, Steven: There's a world of difference between describing or acknowledging possible shortcomings or failures of a product, when  you have  direct experience and  you know what you are talking about, and making an ignorant statement like the one I quoted.  Calling out ignorance and challenging  false statements has nothing to do with "ignoring the bad", or "rainbow paint" ...

If you don't agree with that view, have at it on that specific technical argument, user vs machine error detection, that is ...

There are about 1/2 dozens guys who feel it's their job to make sure every forum, comment section and facebook page on the internet repeats the same - unsubstantiated - stuff. Some would call those fan bois because most of them do it only because they want everyone else in their club and the best way to do so is to prod people to buy the same thing they have. They seem to feel they are somehow upholding honor.

They throw DJI into every conversation - and excel at digging up older models where someone had a problem - not understanding that 500,000+ have been sold. Even then it's all besides the point.

From a technical and/or engineering perspective Solo is not even starting to fulfill it's hype and promises. That's a very simple statement and it doesn't matter if a couple guys flew it around a field successfully. Many people have had problems.

From what some say 3DR is aware of many of these problems - heck, many of the developers here have commented negatively on the Solo! Are the fan bois going to jump on them also. Well, I shouldn't speak so soon since at least one long term member quit here when he got flustered with how poor the Solo implementation was.

They may fix it...sometime. But making it into a 2015/2016 advanced smart quadcopter that lives up to it's billing (the hype continues - they have not pulled back their claims and marketing) is a much bigger job than making it default to manual when it loses GPS (quite often).

To the fan bois - please stop making fools of yourselfs and stay in the forums where you can welcome new owners and brag about how many trouble-free flights you have had...if you don't know enough to make a technical point or argument, you shouldn't clog up a conversation with your whitewash. 

After watching a friend fly another brand quadcopter and struggling for weeks we both ordered Solo's (he made the better choice in vendors and has had his for nearly two weeks, mine will be here tomorrow). I took his copter up on it's maiden flight and found that it handled very well if not a little bit on the tame side which was perfect for him. Over the past two weeks he's been having a blast with his only complaint being he wishes he had more batteries. We did some testing of several tablet's and found that slow tablets will stutter and when the hero takes a picture will cause artifacts on the screen for a few seconds. Faster tablets don't have this issue. The HDMI out worked great while the tablet was connected via Wi-Fi (we tried connecting two tablets but only one will get video). It's very difficult looking at the monitor while he's flying so I plan on using the HDMI to a black pearl monitor for a better view.

So far no issues and he's been through over 20 cycles on his battery.
