That's not garbage--it's binary MAVlink. The terminal screen is only human readable if you go into CLI mode (hit return three times).
But your compass error is significant. If you have an APM 1, you've soldered it on wrong. If you have an APM 2, contact customer support for a RMA.
OK, I have the compass installed in the same orientation as in this photo.
Odds are that there's a soldering error. Check it closely.
I have retouched all solder joints still have the error.

BTW, this is why we integrated the magnetometer directly into APM 2. Too many people destroy the APM 1 ones when they're soldering them on themselves.
