UK Video Transmission. Wi-Fi or Standard Transmission?

I am currently participating in a UAV Challenge whereby we must drop off a payload on a desired target. The issue I am having however is obtaining a reliable video transmission whilst keeping to UK legal regulations with regards to Power. The maximum distance I need to obtain a quality feed back to the Groundstation is 500m.

The current thoughts are to either use the Immersion RC 5.8GHz Transmitter and Receiver pair, however I am a little worried that this pair will struggle to provide a quality feed for image recognition to take place.

The other thought is to use a Raspberry Pi with an attached Wi-Fi module, however again there are issues with range and also signal loss.

Any ideas or solutions to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • I would chose the standard transmission, with cloverleaf antennas. And what's the max power you target ? If you don't have enough power I'd use an antenna tracker with an helicoidal antenna. If you are using an apm, it's easy to set up.
The problem of the WiFi is the range and the latency.
