Unable to access terminal mode, using suggested baud rate as per manual

I get opening com port and then random characters, According to the manual i should see this

This will bring up the Terminal window, and if your APM slider switch is in the right postition (towards the RC connectors), you should see the APM CLI menu:

It seems i am unable to sync between pc and board any ideas please?

Anton,

Looks okay to me. Try typing "help" at the ArduPilotMega] prompt.

Just a thought.

Hello Anton,

Which code have you loaded onto the board?

Hi Martin thnx for your reply, i have done nothing to this unit yet, i simply soldered together, put usb, in pc, loaded relevant drivers and tried to access board via terminal...
I sorted the prob, loaded firmware  -- loaded ArduPilot Mega 2.1 2560, all seems to be working now

...Phew...

Hello Anton,

I thought that your issues were due to no code being loaded into the boards, glad to see this one was an easy fix!

Happy flights

Martin

Martin can i please ask you another question, sorry if this sounds stupid but i dont seem to be on top of this one.... i have most of everything sorted and would like to try the simulation in Xplane, i need to make changes and edit the APM_config.h i have downloaded urduino program etc.

where is this file located where the heck do i find and how do i open it :-( .  have gone through hundreds of the discussions on the forum it seems i am the only one in the world not being able to figure this out..

Please assist..

Regards

A.

You don't need Arduino or to edit that file to run Xplane. Just load the HIL code from the Mission Planner.

All this is right in the manual. Why are you going through hundreds of discussions?

http://code.google.com/p/ardupilot-mega/wiki/Xplane

If you do want to use Arduino and edit the code, all that is in the manual, too.

If you don't use the manual, you won't be able to succeed with APM.

Thnx Chris

This is all new to me i suppose just a bit of information overload :-)

Reason i tried to do that was because afte ri loaded the Hil Code, i read this in the manual .....

If you're using Xplane, you'll need to change some APM configuration settings. Edit your APM_Config.h file to include these lines (temporarily comment out any other GCS or GPS lines you already have):

#define ENABLE_HIL ENABLED
#define GCS_PROTOCOL GCS_PROTOCOL_XPLANE
#define GCS_PORT 0
#define GPS_PROTOCOL GPS_PROTOCOL_IMU
#define AIRSPEED_CRUISE 25 // or whatever works best for your Xplane selection
#define AIRSPEED_SENSOR ENABLED.

Regards
A.

Anton: where do you see that? It's not in the APM manual.

Can you point me to the page where you found that?
