VTOL with new dynamic model

hello everyone! my question is very general, i hope it's taken into consideration that this is my first experience with UAV and i would appreciate any guidance!
I'm a student & currently  assisting some colleagues at the university with a VTOL fixed wing drone project. they had bought the Ardupilot but due to some procedural issues it didn't arrive! a pixhawk seems easier to buy so we're trying to figure out in the next few days whether it would fit the project and how easy it would be to programm ((we're used top programming arduinos so ardupilot was a good choice))

the drone should become a VTOL fixed wing plane but the mechanical design would make it's dynamic model a bit of a mix and the standard predefined categories aren't expected to work for it (it has only to rotors that will tilt after takeoff and provide the thrust unlike the other ones on the website that have for rotors or a third rotor in the back to help with the thrust)) ... so the question is, would it actually be possible to program such a thing and how should that be done ?
i'll surely get some C programmer later to help. but for now;  because i can't personally decide on that i'd appreciate guidance on whether to move on with this , and any tips on where and how to start?
