Hello all,
Can anyone tell me how to setup separate aileron servos for APM 2.5? I'm flying a fairly large powered glider and a Y lead just won't do. I've just bought the APM and I've looked at the Code Google site but I don't understand what they're talking about.
I can't find any answers to this question although I've seen several questions posted.
If I can't figure this out I'll have to start saving for another unit for RTH and stabilize, which is all I bought it for.
I've thought of just using one aileron on the APM and connecting the other direct from Rx to the servo.  I think this might work for RTH as that shouldn't involve any wild flying
I started looking through various forums but the search didn't find anything on this subject.

You need to set these advanced parameters in mission planner, I.e. select CH5 for your second aileron servo set RC5_FUNCTION to 4. You don't need to output dual aileron channels from your Transmitter, if you are wanting to output The second Aileron you set RC5_FUNCTION to 18, NOW RC5 will take the channel 5 signal directly from your radio.

Recommended setting would be set RC5_FUNTION to 18 and output the second Aileron channel on CH5. What ch do you currently use for the second servo?

Bill, I use channels 1 and 5 for ailerons.  I got this input from another forum

"You can’t use Crow with the APM 2 aileron option. At least I could never make it work. I think that it uses Ch1 only for internal calculations and when you flip the Crow switch it goes into a hard roll."

If this is so then I may have to get another OSD with RTH for my glider and just use the APM for my Skywalker.

Although I don't use a switch for Crow, it's proportional on the lower half of my throttle stick with the throttle on the upper half. I use a switch to go into that mode however.

I've been thinking of just putting 1 aileron through the APM and the second direct to the receiver.  I have lost an aileron in flight before and I was able to fly the plane and land it without incident.  As it's only for RTH it will be mostly straight and level flight.  The other aileron should just stay level.

Can you see any problem with that?

hi john, unless u use differential aileron, u do not need to use ch5 output of APM. Y cord will serve the purpose.  CH1 and CH5 need to be used simultaneously only in case you want differentail ailerons. differential ailereon is required only if there is significant adverse yaw in the aircraft. fly the aircraft in manual mode and see the yaw effect using ailerons only. then set the differential ailerons on ch5 and ch1 in ur Tx using CH Mix function and adjust the throw of servoes so that there is no yaw effect while using aileron. after this only you should assign CH5 of APM to second aileron and then set the servo throws in APM to the same ratio as that in your Tx set for manual flying mode.

I think I know what you mean. You want to keep full control for both ailerons, eg. crow for braking.

Basic functions work ok, if you put Ail into APM RC 1 and Ail2 into APM RC 5 (as suggested), and set the advanced parameters  accordingly (RC5_function to 4). But then it depends on the flight mode, what APM allows you to do.

You may have to switch flight mode momentarily to manual when braking. I have routed my flap control (FLAP+FLP2) directly from transmitter output to flap servos (not through APM) and I have assigned a momentary switch for braking. I use transmitters Airbrake -function for this and there is elevator correction as well.  When flying manual this seems to work. I think a mix to activate manual flight mode for APM + Airbrake for the same switch might make it even easier, haven't tried yet.

I don't know if this makes any sense, just learning myself too...


Had a look at the RC_Function parameters, there is a flaperon (5) function, would this using the ailerons as flaps aswell, like it would be setting it up on my tx?
