3DR LEA6H vs M8N-XL GPS field comparison

Hi,

I flew this summer repeatedly with my X8 setup with two GPS : a 3DR LEA6H and a M8N-XL (Drotek):

Browsing though the log files I was amazed how better the M8N-XL performed vs the smaller 3DR LEA6H. I selected random one of those flight logs to show a comaprison between the two GPS systems:

  • Agree, wonder about it as well, doesn't look like there are any (price is 10$ higher for some reason)

    I have a CSGShop M8N 5883 45mm and RTFQ 45mm.

Now am contemplating ordering another CSGShop model, but not sure which one. There is M8N and M8T, both with EMI protection. Does the M8T have advantages that benefit most?

  • Hugues, the GNSS you´re showing looks rather like one of the DroTek XXL . The XL is a bit smaller with 35mm Taoglas patch on top of 50mm GP. Works great as well, for the ones who don´t have enough space.

The ground plane is 80mmx80mm indeed.

  • It's not just a larger ground plane, the M8 is picking up GLONASS satellites too. The caveat is that in some installations the M8 picks up more interference since it can't be as selective when listening for satelites on different bands. Despite better metrics, some people have actually gotten worse performance with their M8's, especially on smaller copters. I use mine on a fixed wing and love it.

I got sub-meter relative precision with the M8N over a mile long delivery mission, look here:

    • :D cool !! Worked 100%.

      Nice footage too.

Yes and the large ground plane of the M8N  helps also as an EMI shield against electronics underneath

    • :)

is that shield only under the GPS / compass module or is the copper connected/wired to the electronics (ground?) ?

    The 3DR LEA6H was retired quite a while ago. It's now a LEA7
