I think the original ArduPilot still has lots of potential life. While it hasn't the capabilities of APM it is a very competent autopilot in it's own right. I have literally hundreds of flights testing mainly the 2.7.x thermopile version but v2.4-v2.6 too. (http://www.diydrones.com/forum/topics/pid-nav-troubles?xg_source=ac...). Just had my first flights with the ArduIMU v2 version recently.

I also use the FLY_BY_WIRE_A setting on a GWS Slowstick as a brilliant basically un-crashable teaching aid removing the fear that many novices face.

As far as any potential further development goes my ideas are as follows :

It would be GREAT to get this project going again and maybe release a v2.8 or even v3.0 however my coding skills are basic at the very best but I can help/contribute in any way.

I changed out my esc on my sky fly max and now have no throttle control (all full) in any mode but manual.  I'm digging out my first ArduPilot (v1) and will give it a try for basic stibilization/FBW.

Chris,

Nice idea to establish an Ardupilot (legacy) User Group.

Since I have been using the FMA CoPilot II on my EZ*s and TwinStar IIs, it will be very easy to convert to the original ArduPilot using either thee IR sensors or the ArduIMU. I feel that the O&M of the original Ardupilot is a better fit for the EZ* and the TwinStar II though I do have three APM/IMUs combos set up for my Maja and eventually the TwinStar IIs.

Regards,

TCIII
