Hi all,

Following the video “RTK centimeter accuracy road test with IMU”, below you can find a static RTK positioning result figure to demonstrate the Precis-BX305 product performance. The figure shows the real-time positioning results with radio data link and here is short description.

The latest pilot version of Precis-BX316 RTK board was showed during 7th China Satellite Navigation Conference in May. This version supports GPS L1L2/BDS B1B2/GLONASS G1G2 and with GPS L1L2 heading mode. In addition, it supports up to 20Hz RTK solution output and onboard SD card for raw data logging, which is key for post process and data analysis. Camera shuttle synchronization feature for aerial mapping applications is added as well. They are ideal for UAVs. The official launch of Precis-BX316 will be in Q4 and datasheet is ready now. The 7th China Satellite Navigation Conference will be held in Changsha Hunan Province from May 18 to 20, 2016. Tersus GNSS will bring the latest product release named Precis-BX316, a dual antenna and frequency RTK board to participate. As the annual event of satellite navigation, the theme of this conference is “Smart Sensing, Smart Perception” and a series of discussions will be organized. In the BeiDou/GNSS Navigation Application session, our engineering expert will give a keynote speech in terms of Application of Low Cost GPS/BDS Receiver in UAV Precise Navigation and Positioning.

The latest Precis-BX316 RTK board is a solution for precise position and heading, delivering multi-constellation RTK baselines between the two connected antennas and to a remote base station. It supports multi-GNSS RTK positioning and enables real-time, centimeter level positioning accuracy.

The upcoming Saturday is the World Book Day, and here share one of my favorite books to all UAV geeks. Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems, & the Economic World Co-Evolution of Man and Machine by Kevin Kelly. The concept the author brought out, the “hive mind” addresses how biological system handle complexity, moves over into industrial ecology and reflects the convergence of biological and technical systems. Through a vast communication network, everything seems to be closely linked.

You may already observer that more and more SOC sensor systems with compact and low-power design have been integrated into objects. They have the ability to communicate the object’s position, temperature, humidity, motion, light intensity, sound and so forth and interact with the object or even adjust the behavior of objects. This scenario is exactly how Kevin Kelly depicts. It is the dawn of a new era in which the machines and systems that drive the economy and society are so complex and autonomous to be indistinguishable from all living things. 2 billion people have access to Internet. Looking forward, 5 to 10 billion objects are going to be entered into another huge network which will tremendously change the life of human. For example, refrigerators go shopping or cars do fueling automatically, etc.Tersus GNSS was established by this inspiration.

RTK Board Integrates with Autopilot (Pixhawk)

Precis RTK board can be integrated with autopilots. We use the connection to Pixhawk flight control as an example. A cable is used to connect the COM1 port of Precis RTK board and the GPS port of the Pixhawk (see Figure 1). It is noticed that the GPS port need a 6pin PicoBlade connector while the COM1 port is a 5pin PicoBlade connector. The pin definition of the Pixhawk GPS port is listed in Table 1. With regarding to the power consumption, we recommend using external power sources. Please also pay attention to the baud rate setting of Pixhawk. Then you need to mount the GNSS antenna and tether the board on your vehicle. 

Please beware of following instructions when you mount the GNSS antenna to your drone.

■ Place the module on the outside of your vehicle (in an elevated position if appropriate) with a clear view of the sky

■ Distance the module from DC power wiring and the batteries by at least 10cm


Next step is setting up the Pixhawk with mission planner. Open Mission planner software and choose the right COM port on the top right corner. Choose 115200 as baud rate (default baud rate of Precis RTK board COM1 port). Then click ‘connect button’ on the right. Then it is recognized by mission planner if the GPS status becomes ‘3D Fix’ (see Figure 2).
