Welcome to the hobby Dean!

I would try to build as light as possible but do not obsess on it. There are far more important things to consider than weight.

Although I have not posted a build of my 2nd quad, it uses the same materials as the first - plywood and AL square tubing. The outside dimensions are the same (motor to motor distance) but the arms are shorter. Two battery boxes, 3DR 'C' style access to the PDB, and the ESCs will be on the central body plate rather than the arms.

My motto is 'I don't complain about her weight if she does not complain about my flying.'

Flight time with a 3S 3200mAH is around 9 minutes. That is plenty of time to mess up and long enough to gain experience.
