Regarding your question, I have a quad so no personal experience with neither hex nor octa.

My decision to build a hex was basically to reduce the cost and have slightly larger unobstructed angle of view for the camera. Did consider the Y6 configuration but got cold feet when I found negative comments about loss of payload capabilities.

Now that I've seen your latest project, I want to reconsider the design.

The additional cost associated to the octa (versus hex) becomes less important now with the possibility of having a 120º field of view.

I'll be glad to support no matter what your decision.

If you want a design tool, like the excel CAD, post a reply in the BYO blog so when i answer it, others will find it too. let me know if you are interested in octa or hexa because they are different worksheets.  these tools are still in a rough shape.  but i'll work with you to improve them if you are interested.

you nailed the disadvantages of the octa.  the primary advantage is recovery.  when you lose a motor (or two), the octa doesn't really care.  with the X2, yesterday it took off just fine with only 7 motors.

Keep it posting. Everytime I read your posts I learn something. I am also building a quad-- regular configuration. Mission is to carry gopro and to shoot our surf trips with flight time of 15mins. A bit heavy quad thou.

My design is an all aluminum frame. I already cut the parts and currently building the frame. It has got a 560mm motor-motor distance.

perfect size.  that will be plenty agile.  and Al is the next best thing to composite.

if you run wires outside the al tubes, you can seal both end of the tubes to help it float or just use an appropriate amount of pool noodles for landing gear ... not that you will want to land it in the ocean, but recover it.  water does not destroy DC electronics (with really small props it would run just fine under water) as long as you get the salt way from the steel parts soon enough.

you might want to add a discussion and assign it to general.  you will get lot's of ideas to embrace or mace.

a discussion on sand versus motors would also be good.  some motor housing are somewhat closed and some are wide open (like mine).  Which is better?  Easy In/Out or Hard In/Out?  Maybe sand flies just carry a canister of air blast with them.
