NorCal Man Becomes First in California to Be Arrested for Flying Drone Into Firefighting Zone

Posted on July 16, 2016 at 6:05pm 5 Comments

I normally don't like to post extremely short blogs that just link to another article, but I think this has been a long time coming.

I can't say that I hope for severe charges/fines against the operator (at this time), but I do hope that we only have to put up with one more season of seeing this in the news every other day. …

More than meets the eye: a bit about caution and credibility

One reason I constantly check DIYdrones throughout the day is the tenancy to have well-written and informative blog posts on the front page, as opposed to some of the "hype machine news" found elsewhere, though we get our share as well.

This blog post is really intended to be "just a blog post". I have multiple half-finished and in progress blog posts…

Drones in Firefighting (and fire reporting)

Drones & Firefighting

I wanted to (quickly) share some experiences with the use of drones in firefighting, as my UAS and goals differ a bit from most departments we've seen that are starting to use drones.

I am a career firefighter that recently relocated to a small rural community in Oregon,…

Hello MarioSpeedwagon

You mentioned in one post you had applied for a Section 333.  Do you have a pilot or sports pilot certificate?  Just wondering if producers without these certificates are filing for an exemption to this requirement?  Not sure you can??

Did you file the 333 for you company or yourself?  If for your company you can hire a certified pilot.  Again, just wondering how producers are filing the 333s.

Hi Mario, Thank you for writing directly, Chris already told me she already deleted her own blog due to the controversy.

I honestly have great respect for all the moderators, generally you handle things very fairly and in line with both the TOCs and the intent of the site.

But in my opinion a comment like "your illustration is in conflict with our TOCs" with no clarification of the conflict was in itself inappropriate.

Further on my carefully scrutinizing of the TOCs I could find nothing that could be vaguely interpreted as a "conflict".

Unfortunately things got out of hand rapidly after that.

I do not normally go blindly tilting at windmills, but, the fact is nobody ever did clarify what the conflict was and the general tone became hostile.

I am sure the intended "conflict" was the appearance of the Predator drone on the cover, but that is definitely not an issue covered by the TOCs and it is singled out as a single appearance where there have literally been dozens and dozens of them before on this site with no one objecting.

When we started, the Predator was even our primary logo.

Sure her some of her stuff has military applications, but no more so than the Pixhawk or Ardupilot.

She seemed a nice lady with some very advanced imaging technical information and in my opinion any substantive concerns for either appropriateness or value for our group were totally misplaced and the point missed.

We needlessly offended a potentially valuable contributor who had absolutely no negative intent whatsoever.

I am afraid when I see something like that that I feel is occurring, I am just not the kind of person who can walk away.

Needless to say that has not necessarily always gone over well with my "superiors", one of the reasons that for the last 30+ years of my life I was a consultant and independent developer.

Best Regards,
