Testing X8 configuration without two propellers

Yesterday I had a few tests with our Tiger Shark in Octa Quad configuration.

The tests were made to see how the copter would cope the loss of one or two propellers.

Obviously the test was in a ideal condition where the propeller just loosens and falls off the Octo.

The test…

Payloader gets its first field test

At last, I was able to get the payloader into the field today! A good day for it too - moderate breeze, so a good test of 3.1.2 loiter as well. It flew great - the hex barely even noticed the weight, and Nicadrones magnet worked perfectly with a sub kilo load - was able to sling it about no problem.

So spent a couple of packs doing practise runs…

MyGeekShow builds a flying wing crossbow launcher

After having some difficulty launching the heavier Raptor140B+ (carries three 5Ah batteries) I decided to invest the time into building a crossbow launcher.

It has a few key features that make it an excellent launch platform:

-Totally retains the airplane in all directions (gust of wind won't knock it off the the launcher)…

Tau Labs Altitude control loop architecture and INS tuning

So for the last week or two I have been looking a bit at the performance of the Tau Labs altitude control and INS filter we have and the altitude control loop.

One issue I was suffering from is that the velocity estimate would be biased because of variations in the accelerometer bias. I switched to using a 16 state version of the INS written by Dale Schinstock that included an estimate of the bias terms for…

Arducopter: Motor Response Compensation

I see a lot of work being done to increase the update rate getting to the motors of a quad for stability. The APM only updates the PWM value at 100hz (not ideal), so I got to thinking about how one could improve the performance without too much headache... (TODO: see if the 100hz loop could be increased to 200 or more...)

In this graph I modeled a…
