The near future of precision farming

I have been quite successful to perform general aerial mapping, producing othomosaic and digital surface model for our local plantation company. Our Skywalker base UAV power by APM is a very reliable tools for acquire aerial images. Currently for a typical mission we fly at 300 meter altitude and resulting ground sample distance is about 9 to 12…

Why microdrones should eat meat...

...at least if they want to compete with insects for energy management.

A University of Maryland professor's experiments with solar-powered microdrones finds that sunlight is still an order of magnitude too low in power to keep his aircraft aloft. That's why insects don't use sunlight, but rather food: chemical energy (like digesting…

Power Distribution Board

After putting together a Carbon Core 950 and trying to fit all the electronics, ECSs and miscellaneous electronics into the frame, I realized I really need to use a power distribution board to keep the installation clean. I know there are some pretty good power distribution boards available, but none that did what I exactly wanted. I ended up cobbling together a…

Drone Social Impact Award Announced

The Drone User Group Network just announced a drone social impact award, which will be a cash prize for the most socially beneficial, documented use of a drone that costs less than three thousand dollars. I hope some of you will consider submitting entries for this award as it is aimed squarely at the kinds…

Identify UAV Lost In Malibu, California

This UAV apparently got away from its operators and wound up in the trash being collected at a local park in Malibu, California. Can any of the members on DIY Drones identify this UAV and who it belongs to? Full story here: Lost…

More on textbook delivery drone concept

[Just adding video and commentary to what was covered in the earlier post] I'm usually pretty skeptical of "drone delivery" concepts, given that most are just marketing stunts. But new Australian startup Flirtey has at least addressed (if not solved) some of the most obvious problems with the model. Their…

Textbook delivery by drone in Australia?

Or is it just marketing?  I have a hard time seeing how this works financially...

As countries around the world gradually lift regulations on the use of commercial drones, a new startup called Flirtey hopes to turn Australia into a worldwide industry leader for the use of…

3D Printed Prop protectors- 3DR Quadcopter Version C

I spent some time over the weekend designing this prop protector for a 3DR quadcopter. So far it's 90% done, I just need to design a little mechanism to lock it into the arm. It's too big for my 3D printer so I'm probably going to separate it into 4 pieces that lock in with glue. Once I have the full product done I'll probably order them through Shapeways so I can get them in…

SpaceX Grasshopper 744m test

Another amazing video from SpaceX.  Can anyone ID the copter, seen at 0:45? It looks a bit like the Dragonflyer X4 because of the green LED on the underside, but has molded arms, whereas the Dragonflyer has carbon arms.

"Warning of RC-Timer" or "Why you shouldn't buy from far east cloners"

As many others, I have bought some "clone products" from RC-timer in the past, simply because some stuff is pretty cheap there. Now, I got the bill for that and learned that paying less often means paying double.

Earlier this year, I bought two MinimOSD clones from RC-Timer. One went to my copter and the other for the moment into storage for another project. Several weeks later, I…

Transporter 3D: Versitile Fpv 3D or 2D for Rift or other 3D based goggles

So it's been a long time since I was on diydrones but I wanted to reach out to a lot of you guys that fly fpv and happen to own a pair of 3D goggles.  Maybe an oculus rift or some cinimizers.  Now with the Transporter 3D (aka T3D) you can do 3d fpv or 2D with large fov using your old fpv gear or new gear from EMR Labs or someone elses' 3D cam or a home made set using two cameras.  This system gives you many options to use.  It takes in composite signals and outputs it to…

Drone Crash!

(Repost from: http://conservationdrones.org/2013/10/12/drone-crash/)

People often ask how often we crash our drones. It really isn't that often nowadays. But when it happens, a crash is caused by human error 99% of the time. During our trip to Panama, we had two crashes…
