ZERO TO HERO
Two weeks ago I decided take the plunge and build a drone. I'd been watching a heap of videos online, such as the monster drones from alishanmao as well as …

Hi guys, This is my first blog post. I thought I would share with you my hexacopter. I call it v2.0 because I crashed it after the first build. I believe I had some issues with the compass being interfered with by the integrated PDB.
My specs are as follows:
Flamewheel 550 clone…

After some years of experimenting with copters and fixed wings there was a need for a flying system with flexible mounting options for different sensors, transmitters and other payloads. It is made of cheap materials, easy to get and easy to repair. The…

Ok now I have seen it "all"... For some reason I were not stunned to see that it was Lady GaGa who made this first.. But here we are.
On their video it looks a bit badly tuned but it flies. Unfortunately video cannot be embedded to Ning so everyone need…

We have developed a PID position controller that can communicate with arducopter via 3DR radio. The position controller is running on the ground computer and transmitting the commands to hexacopter at 50HZ via mavlink protocol. The mavlink packet used during our test flights is "set_roll_pitch_yaw_thrust_send". We have tested the hovering…

A video of the Shrediquette GEMiNi:
Hi everyone! I just posted this already in the internet somewhere else, but I think it might be worth a blog-post on DIYdrones as well, as it contains some information on motors / propellers / aerodynamics that might be interesting to you guys...:
I spent some time during holidays…

I have been searching high and low for a good affordable large hexa system, with the main objective to lift 500gr (camera, FPV transmitter, etc) for as long as possible, and have the video stabilized.
The S800 looked ok, but due to some issues around the boom flexibility and cost, I ditched that idea. The…

Hi all,
I've made two videos showing the ArduCopter Auto (and RTL in second video) capabilities of ArduCopter.
The first video is a flight with 5 waypoints at varying altitudes and includes AutoLand.
I only did not include Auto Takeoff in these videos but can confirm that also works well. There was limited takeoff space so I took…

Hi,
We were trying to find ways to secure (or at least patrol) a crime infested green belt in our area when one of the guys mentioned that it would be great to have a thermal camera on a helicopter to be able to spot these guys and perform some sort of aerial support for the guys on the ground.
Now, being involved in helis…

Last post I presented this homemade hexacopter. This is primarily a mechanical steadycam style motion compensation/smoothing system, the 2 servos (roll, pitch) engage and act as dampers to reduce oscillation and alter the "home" position to…

This is my project, I have been working on it for a couple of months. Is not ready yet and certainly it's not good looking, need more work but here is a video of some features.
Note this is a Steadycam design based on ECILOP ideas. But with a Multiwii board instead of gyros. Multiwii is fixed to the steadycam…

The evolution of Multicopters into fully autonomous systems is progressing at an alarming rate!
Here we have a Hexacopter with a Hexpod for landing gear - allowing omnidirectional ground and air based movement. I…

I know that it is taken as common knowledge that a hexacopter with a single motor failure cannot be flown beyond a controlled crash landing, but this is just plain wrong with our ArduPilot Mega hardware and if we can't do it, it is because of inadequate software.
I have a KK X525 quadcopter which I have flown very successfully for some time with the APM2.
One ESC on it is now progressively failing, continuously reducing power to it's motor after about 2 minutes flight, but all…

Testing my fully charged HaiYin 5000mAh 4S 30-40c battery. Almost 17 minutes of mostly Loiter mode flying and a bit of manual flying towards the end.

I managed to test the Altitude Hold and Loiter functions of my ArduPilot Mega2 controlled Hexacopter and was pretty impressed with it. There was strong winds initially but when it died down to a breeze I turned on the altitude hold and it seemed to hover with a deviation of around 2m. Then when I turned on the Loiter mode, my hexacopter stayed within a 5m radius…
