The mysterious AltHold problem .... solved

The APM 2.5 on my 600 sized heli is mounted in a nice box together with the RX as you can see at the picture below.

The holes where the wiring comes out are plugged with some foam to prevent air turbulence reaching the barometer. The box hangs on 4 ear plugs for vibration isolation, so in a hover I record only about 0.05 g or less of vibration. The heli flies…

T-Rex 450 Flying automatic Missions APM 2.0 firmware 2.7.3

T-Rex 450 flying automatic Missions

APM 2.0   firmware 2.7.3  MediaTek  and barometer

The non flying weather took a little break; this was a good time to test Mission flying with my T-Rex 450.

The sea breeze and the SW wind were fighting each other, so the flight was at times quite bumpy.  As you can see on the video, the Heli was…

Alt Hold glitch - APM 2.0 - Firmware Heli 2.7.3

In my case Alt Hold worked always really nice, within 1 m in calm conditions, and still does.

But one incident scared me a bit. A few sec after switching to Alt Hold in about 5m, the heli dropped to the ground.  My first thought was a glitch caused by emf from the ESC. After I calmed down, I went for two other trials and like clockwork the same glitch…

T-Rex 450 loiter

APM 2.0

Now winter has passed in New Zealand, so I went to make loiter working on the T-Rex 450.

After playing a bit with the PIDs it worked pretty well as you can see in the video.

There was a sea breeze going but the heli did very well…

Keep your GPS fix and system running while changing the Battery

If you don’t like to power down your Heli at every battery change, and losing your GPS fix... there is a solution.

Just install a parallel second battery connecter (can be a much smaller one), prepare an old battery with the matching connector and a Diode in the + wire as a backup battery.

(To charge the backup battery you have connect the charger behind the diode)…
