Google has just released Google Earth 6.0. I haven't had a chance to check it out in detail, but the only thing that jumped at me as new and useful for us is 3D trees, which will make our screenshots prettier, at… Continue

More cool stuff with Willow Garage's Robot Operating System (ROS) from I Love Robotics: "Updates to Brown University's ROS Software Repository should soon include the ardrone_brown driver which improve the AR.Drone's ROS performance with access to the front camera. The video above shows the system in action tracking an AR… Continue

Balancing an inverted double pendulum

This isn't about UAVs per se, but for students of control theory, the physics of a double pendulum (hinged in the middle) is an example of chaotic motion and notorious hard to model. Well, this guy did it. Keep watching...this is mindblowing.

New report on China's booming UAV industry

China’s WJ600 Jet-Powered UAV

From my email, a promo for a new market research report. No doubt very expensive, but it's interesting (and appropriate) that China's UAV industry is finally being taken seriously. Those who think…

HappyK GCS in the field (very bad video)

Some of the APM dev team were enjoying the spectacular Northern California weather today, testing various APM navigation functions. But it was also our first chance to test the awesome HappyKillmore GCS in the field. It worked great! The "chase cam" view on the moving map is particularly cool. Sorry about this terrible video, but shiny laptop screens and the bight California sun don't… Continue

APM boards, magnetometers back in stock

Good news: APM boards are back in stock at Sparkfun, and the hot magnetometer boards are back in stock at the DIY Drones store. They're selling faster than we can make them, so get em while you can! (Actually, our production is ramping up nicely, so they shouldn't be out of stock for more than a day or two going… Continue

FPV goes very wrong, plane kidnapped, then....

Hilarious. This is why you want live video/telemetry in your planes!

"One of my 1st FPV attempts didn't turn out so well, it was found by some teens whose first thought wasn't to find the rightful owner until they discovered a camera on-board. A couple hours later I recovered the plane with the help of a…
