7W boosters for OpenLRS Project

Hi Guys

Good news from OpenLRS (Opensource Long Range System) project!

Today i received 7 watt RF booster chips and at last i'm ready to finishing the PCB designs. This weekend i will finish the booster design and PCBs will be ready in 3 weeks.

Here is the latest PCB designs of Tx, Rx and IMU modules of OpenLRS

Tx and Rx modules size smaller than most of RC modules. Rx module including I2C (or 3 adc) conector pads on back side. I'm planning to connect my new 6DOF IMUnext v3 board there. Rx can stabilize the plane (or quadro) without any external parts and it sends the parameters to the ground over telemetry system. And Rx's rs232 port already available for digital telemetry or direct GPS connection.

Some advantages of OpenFARC:

  • Direct ground computer based remote control and telemetry (Autopilot by computer?)
  • Rx based Autopilot/stabilization/return to home.
  • No Frequency hoping. I'm planning to using static 2 frequency switching for safety. You can use 2 or more modules for receiving the telemetry signals or transmitting the controls with static frequency, because you know your frequencies. Or hopping already possible.
  • If you want to use it for really long range, you can add 7W booster on Tx module (only one way control without telemetry)
  • Direct analog RSSI output on Rx
  • RS232 telemetry and commandset (like "S2512" mean turn the 2th servo to center position, etc)

I'm developing OpenLRS project with AVR-GCC on Atmega328 chipset. All ATMEL developers are welcome ;)

  • hello,I have been seen the openlrs in China.I am so sorry,my English not very well. The TX and RX are baise on 433MHZ ?I want to learn about that.

  • @Happy

I'm planning to using full transparent RS232 9600baud gate for current autopilots or other telemetry systems. It will work like Xbee modules.

And i want to design another protocol like DeviceID,SensorID,Data  protocol. And OpenLRS's cpu's DeviceID will be "1" , and autopilot or ground station can send "1,1,250" for "set the 1th servo to 250" or "1,101,250" for "roll the plane to 25 degree from horizon with IMU control"

  • Melih, do you have a protocol document? I'd like to add support for this project to my Ground Station project.

  • I have used the bluetooth version of that USB balloon. Makes it much easier.
  • @Michael:

Good, i will contact with this company if my agent cant find them. Thanks.

    @Marco:

I'm not sure about our ballooning freedom here, because they can find a hole in the rules anytime. I will start from pilot balloons (only a balloon plus a led light) and i will add some equipments every day. Any problem, i will send a mail from the jail ;)

I released 3 balloon in 2 days but today cloud coverage is %100 and i'm waiting for clear weather. I will share the details on the diydrones and our blog (blog.flytron.com)

Here is the our latest funny thing, it is first USB Balloon on the planet :)

I would wait for Melih Karakelle to complete his design and buy

    finished product...much easier.

  • I use 2 GPS trackers just to be sure to find it again. I have more than 100€ in devices on board.

I think OpenLRS may help: Maybe on the next balloons, but surely on my UAV (still under coinstruction: see my profile)

I see in Turkey you have some more freedom in doing things: :-)

In Switzerland we can launch a balloon till 2.5 Kg payload if it's more than 5Km away any airport. No cut-off device, no radar reflector and even no notification to authority needed. But if I want to use GPS navigation to control the "capsule"(I wanted to use a paraglide) instead using a "stupid" parachute, it's considered a remote controlled device and I have to fly it LOS. It's a nonsense: They prefer an uncontrolled landing everywhere (on a highway or a airport) instead of a controlled flight.

  • Yes GPRS is good choose in your case.

    About recovery:

I'm designing a GPS guided micro glider (less than 100gr) and this is why i'm testing the equipments with balloons ;)

After few tests, i will send an automatic glider that it will turn back to landing area.  Maybe OpenLRS can help to tracking the live datas.

  • I need a license even for the APRS tx, and the tx are too heavy. Finally I just need to locate the capsule after landing. GPRS cost aren't an issue and GSM coverage here is about 99.9%. I will receive from a metereological forecast company data about wind and jet stream activity, so I will get a start window that takes the balloon max. 50-80Km away from start. I just don't want to hit the alps because recovery is really hard then. For the flight tracking I have a GPS(sparkfun HAB Board) logger on board. The main Goal is to take video and pictures for me.

  • I found it from a local supplier, i guess they are ordering them from asia. I will search for possible suppliers after test.
