A detailed look at Pixracer

The video below (enable audio!) shows a detailed overview of the new Pixracer flight controller.

It is the 4th generation of the Pixhawk flight controller family (make: FMUv4) and like the first generations designed by the Pixhawk Open Hardware team in collaboration with an international dev team. It supports the PX4 and APM flight stacks. If you like to try PX4 on it, follow the user guide.

I asume the schematics are your work, right?
I am confused by the pinouts for the 3dr radio in the setup proposal topside.
If compared with other docs (http://ardupilot.org/copter/docs/common-sik-telemetry-radio.html) your pinout seems reversed?

  • I have the pixracer working with code compiled from the master.

On my pixhawk I can use the px4flow module, but on the pixracer it fails to open the driver.  I can't find the source of the problem in the code.  Does anyone know the issue?

  • I could connect Pixracer in Mission Planer via USB. As soon as I inserted a SD-Card, it was working fine!

  • FYI... I did figure out I can connect no problem with the PX4 flight stack installed but cannot with the APM copter code. I tried installing the APM copter with both QGC and APM Planner 2.0 and in either case it won't connect so I know it's not hardware, QGC, or APM Planner 2.0. Looks like it's the APM Copter code still needs a few wrinkles ironed out.

  • I just think the support is a work in progress. The PixRacer is very new by flight controller standards. I would expect as more people need / want it the respective projects will get it worked out.

  • @Phillip  I installed the PX4 flight stack with QGC and it seems to work now. So must be something with my GCS or the APM flight stack.

  • @Phillip  I do see others having the same problem running the same amp copter code and GCS I am using so I will reach out to those developers and see if they are aware of it. In the mean time I will load PX4 with QGround Control and see if it works. If so I'll know it's not hardware related. Thanks

  • @Richard, I am very familiar with connecting a PixRacer loaded with PX4 to a computer running QGroundControl. If you are looking for a simple confirmation that the hardware is working I can help you. The little WiFi modules do get warm as you noticed. Your picture is correct, the wifi module is at least partially working because your device has been given the correct IP address. I am just not clear if ArduCopter and the apps you reference are ready to work out of the box at this time.

  • ps Thanks Cala! I wish I had a 3d printer!

  • And yet... no data transfer...??? I don't get it. The wifi module actually gets quite warm. Not too hot to touch but close.  Hope I can get a solution this was a big factor in my buying the thing. I have Taranis Telemetry so I don't really need  separate 3dr telem radio. The wifi module however is perfect for connecting to a ground station on the ground real quick for adjustments to params etc.
