Beginner with $650

My aim is to make a simple Ardupilot setup on a EasyStar for strictly £400 or $650 (but shipping is expensive globally as I'm in the UK). I have the Fidi programmer and reasonable Arduino experience so thats not a problem but I want to know, for instance whether the 4Hz GPS is worth the extra $100 etc. (I already have the 32 Channel LS20031 GPS 5Hz Receiver carried by sparkfun) and a Spectrum DX5e w/ receiver.Any mods to the EasyStar worth doing to start with? (I can get it for £80 inc. delivery)I know that its probably covered else where but not all in one place.Any comments would be much obliged.

  • So I've got the EasyStar and brushless motor, controller and servos. :) Now to get all my group to help me to put it together.
  • Chris,

  • Hi Chris,
Sounds ok. Pity about the VAT etc, I suppose the size of the parcel attracts attention but at the end of the day the total price is still good.
    Might invest myself.
    Cheers

  • Hi. It arrived yesterday. I'm actually quite impressed with it! It seems fairly good quality - I have never had a foam plane before (im a scratch builder at heart!) so i've got nothing to compare it to. It contains all the accessories needed - which considering the type of flying it will be doing are fine. It comes with a small tube of foam glue (dunno how good it is but we'll see!)
The motor is preinstalled but i may change that and the prop for something a little bigger.
The canopy is a thin piece of plastic held by a magnet, so there is loads of room for the ardupilot.

Oh i got stung £8.34 vat and £8 parcel force charge!

    Hi Chris,
Has it arrived and what do you think of it?

  • This may help you a bit in terms of a complete brushless easystar setup that works.

Giles, you can use your LS20031 (ArduPilot has a NMEA parser, so you can use an NMEA GPS), but we won't be able to support it since we haven't used one ourself."

Please can you guys help with a few questions regarding setting the LS20031 GPS unit to work with the ArduPilot board....

    1) Does Aurdupilot need to 'talk' to the gps unit....ie does the rx on the gps need to be connected?

    2) The LS20031 can be programmed using "MiniGPS" , 'HappyKillmore' suggested that GPRMC & GPGGA are enabled what other parameters.....WAAS?

    3) What is the baud rate that the ArduPilot board needs?

    4) The LS20031 runs on 3.3v so another voltage reg will be needed.

    5) As ArduPilot board supplies 5v I guess a logic level board required....?

As Giles pointed out in a previous post, buying from the USA with UK import VAT and postal charges quite often doubles the price of parts needed to build these projects.
Buying the LS20031 + logic level board from here in the UK costs £36 ($57) +postage, the 3.3v reg etc is only a couple of pounds.

    Chris...
On my UAVX quadrocopter I have replaced my EM406 (1Hz) for the LS20031 and a logic board (4Hz), so what would the problems be doing this on the Arduino board?
Sorry if these seem very basic questions but I am a real newbie on a steep learning curve.

  • Hi Chris,
    Thanks for the information.
Looks good, I guess part of the cockpit would stand some trimming so all the boards would fit.
