DIY Drones visit to Scaled Composites

3689411256?profile=originalThis week, some of the 3D Robotics engineers and I visited Scaled Composites in Mojave, about an hour and half east of Los Angeles, to demo ArduCopter, get a tour of the facilities and talk about the DIY Drones community-driven innovation model with the Scaled engineers. Scaled is famous for being founded by the legendary Burt Rutan (who retired this year), winning the X-Prize for the first civilian mission to space, and for designing SpaceShip Two and its launch aircraft WhiteKnight Two (both shown above), which will be the aircraft used by Virgin Galactic to start the first regularly scheduled space tourism business in a few years.  It is total geek nirvana and the closest thing to the Right Stuff still in operation.

 

We weren't allowed to take pictures for most of our tour and meetings (we got to see EVERYTHING, including watching the Virgin Galactic pilots train on the awesome room-sized Spaceship Two simulator and poking our heads into Spaceship Two and Whiteknight Two), but here are a few shots we could take:

 

3689411156?profile=originalWhen you approach the Scaled facilities, the first thing you see is the Rotary Rocket, which it made about a decade ago and flew once before funding issues killed the project.

3689411302?profile=originalBack in the 1990s, Scaled designed one of their first UAVs, the Raptor. They're mostly a manned aircraft company, so they made it "manned optional".  That meant having the pilot sit outside! Below is a photo of that seat in storage today. Note the stirrups--they had to tie the pilot's feet to the fuselage so the wind didn't blow them out of the straps!

This was a crazy design by one engineer back in the day trying to prove that you didn't need high aspect-ratio wings (long thin ones, like a glider) for efficient flight. He survived, but his theory didn't.

 

3689411312?profile=originalThis is a personal project underway by one of the engineers. It's an electric airplane that is designed to set distance and endurance records for manned electric flight. It uses a brushed electric motor (we weren't allowed to photograph it, but it was no larger than a dinner plate) that only generates 20 horsepower. But this design is so efficient, that's enough. BTW, they use a brushed rather than brushless motor because its failure mode is more gentle. As we all know, if something goes wrong with one of the brushless motor wires or the ESC, it's game over--it can destroy itself in seconds. There are fewer things that can wrong with a brushed motor.

3689411328?profile=originalThen it was time for an outdoors demo. The wind was blowing at 28 knots (32 miles per hour)!!! Here, Jeff is setting up the ground station.

 

3689411368?profile=originalArduCopter handled the wind pretty well! But eventually when we put it Loiter mode at higher altitude a crazy gust blew it out of the flight area and Gigio had to take over manual control. Unfortunately it was too far away to see the orientation (sadly he wasn't flying in Simple Mode, which would have made that unnecessary), so he had to put it down in a neighboring field. Copter retrieved, safe and sound!

    Hobbyking is a key part of the "democratization of technology" trend. I would expect them to help take us from DIY Drones to "RC Built-in". I think their rollout of the KK multicopter control board is a great example. The technology was mature enough to be mass-produced, so they're doing that. I would be very happy if they did the same with one of our future products, making that the gateway drug to more high-end innovation that this community can focus on.

    This process of community-led innovation ending up in mass-market products seems positive to me. It puts good products in the hands of more consumers at cheaper prices, which increases the awareness and overall appetite for more innovative products at the high end.

    We do see a big role for smartphones and tablets, which is why we developed the PhoneDrone Android board. Eventually we will be able to have a choice between an app or dedicated hardware for many products. Another great way to put technology in the hands of more people, more easily and cheaper.
  • Chris, that electric-powered aircraft is actually a Quickee Q1 (single-seat version of 1970's Rutan design).  Electric aircraft are feasible, even with 20hp.  There are some Cri-Cris flying electric (low range).  A smooth design like that will go ~100-120mph on 20hp.

  • Thanks for the Pyramid, Chris.  Where do you see Hobbyking (seriously) fit in?  Also, smartphones?

    The part about experimental autopilot / mission planner / engine display would be a good fit for the new Android development kit!! (read engine rpm, fuel flow, prop pitch and use internal gyro, accel, compass and GPS to make a good low-cost PFD / EICAS).

  • Chris thanks for coming to Scaled, i very much enjoyed your presentation and got quite a kick out of watching the ArduCopter fight the Mojave winds! I was the guy in the audience that asked if ArduPilotMega has ever been used in an experimental homebuilt airplane. While i see a clear difference between small, inexpensive RC sized DIY Drones and full scale experimental airplanes, along with the the culture and learning curves associated with each.. i do see tremendous potential for the development model, hardware/software that DIY Drones has created. Right now the cheapest Electronic Flight Instrument Systems (or EFIS) for use in experimental airplanes still cost thousands, and they are no more sophisticated than an iPhone. I also appreciated your mention of a "Google PHD" as i am a firm believer that the expectations for higher education today are somewhat ridiculous in a lot of cases. More power to the Maker, the HomeBuilder, and the self-motivated garage hobbyists!

    Krill, we don't have a DIY Drones tour per se, but as part of my day job I'm writing a book about the rise of the maker movement as a new industrial model, so there will be hundreds of examples and dozens of profiles of similar communities in there. It's coming out middle of next year...no title yet, but follows up from my earlier books "The Long Tail" and "FREE" and the Wired article "The New Industrial Revolution" AKA  "Atoms are the New Bits"

    Do you or DIYDrones plan to visit such amateur communities and make posts about it as this one? I think it would be very inspiring and help to share experience with each other.
  • Chris, Thanks a bunch for the presentation out at Scaled. It got some cogwheels turning. We fly a lot of RC stuff, and your project will bring a new dimension to our hobby. I'm really impressed with the open source method of implementation! Somewhat of a new concept to me... Thanks again!
