3D Robotics

Thanks to everyone who made DroneCon 2014 such a rich and entertaining experience! Over the coming days we’ll be posting videos of this year’s DroneCon talks, so that those of you who couldn’t make it can still access the material, and those who attended can revisit it. We’ll also soon be rolling out www.dronecon.org, so that these videos and all things Con may finally have their well-deserved home. Will let you know when we’re live!

For now, enjoy this first talk from lead developer Andrew Tridgell: “Autopilot Development Updates.”

thanks Scott, I've downloaded the XCSoar code.

The way I plan to implement the terrain following is the aircraft won't be tied to a particular terrain data source. It will just ask the GCS for a set of altitudes (in 5x5 grids). It is up to the GCS what source it uses to provide that terrain data. I initially expect GCS implementations to start with SRTM, but I also expect that other sources will be added. We support two sources in MAVProxy now, SRTM and the GA format (Geoscience Australia provide nice grids for many parts of Australia).

    Cheers, Tridge

  • Hi @Andrew Tridgell - there is 1 second SRTM data for Australia too. You can get it from CSIRO. We use it for gliding. There is a heap of work in this space in the XCSoar open source project, all the processing to find the holes in the data (as SRTM data has lots of holes), and processing the files. We also store all the data as JPEG 2000 - this is better compression. Since all that code is written in C++ and open source I think there could be a good opportunity to share some of the code.

Interestingly XCSoar also has all the airport and airspace data - not so useful for Ardupilot, but very useful for ground stations.

I hadn't realised I'd talked for so long! I really went over time. My apologies to all the people who attended and ended up late for dinner!

(I was giving the talk remotely from Australia)

  • Excellent pitch.  I look forward to listening to the rest of the Dronecon talks.

Blimey, I don't understand most of this but it shows just what is happening, very cool.

  • I really enjoy these talks, thanks for posting!
