First glimpse of GoPro Karma

3689699752?profile=originalFrom the Verge:

GoPro might have accidentally given us a sneak peak of its Karma drone. The company announced earlier this week that it would be unveiling the anticipated aircraft for the first time later this month. A since-removed preview on several of the company’s European websites contain a thumbnail of what appears to be the anticipated aircraft.

GoPro will be holding an event on September 19th to show off the drone (and potentially its Hero5 camera). The image on its French, Italian, Spanish and German websites show off a black and white quadcopter, which links right to the company’s Karma page.

The site also showed off a previously unannounced stabilizer, which led directly to a 404 page.

GoPro camera features are closely tied to functionality that is implemented in the Ambarella chip used, and the specifications on the latest chips (including the low power H2 and H12 'sport camera' models) specifically mentions Multi-exposure HDR processing.

So the only reason for GoPro to not use already existing functionality in the chip, would be to artificially limit the feature progression and save it for the next model. Either that or using an older and cheaper chip model without HDR to save a dime on every camera.

  • Hi John,

HDR 1080P 60fps would indeed be the killer capability.

In reality 1080P HDR is a lot more worth while for most uses than 4K.

I am not so sure that electronic stabilization will be good enough for us anyway, but the lens correction capability might be nice.

Somebody soon is bound to do HDR in an action cam the way you suggest and that will really be worth looking at whether it is GoPro or somebody else.

Sadly, from the "leaks" I have seen so far, no mention is made of HDR in the GoPro 5, guess we will just have to wait and see.

HDR is going to be the next big thing on TV and in cameras.

Looking at the latest Ambarella chips my guess for Hero5 will be h.265 support, electrical image stabilization and HDR video processing. They could also theoretically offer 4K 60fps, but I doubt it will happen since there is no 4K 60fps video sensor that I know of in the price range we are talking about here.

One thing that would be interesting is if they implemented 1080p60 HDR using dual exposure. Meaning that the shutter is exposing at 120hz using a high and a low exposure setting every other frame, and then merged into 60fps HDR video. My Samsung S7 smartphone does this for 1080p30 HDR (60fps dual exposure), and the results are great.

Incredible but YI as a company reacted to my post on Amazon.fr (where i commented negatively) asking me to change my comment if they can show me it will work fine with a new firmware. This is à pro and constructive reaction from YI. Wait and see if they can prove me wrong...

  • Hi Hugues,

And thank you very much for chiming in here.

Good to know the Yi is a dud, I was just going by other on line information and testimonials.

In your case, an accomplished DIYD member, the actual experience with the Yi clearly indicates it is best to stay away.

I have a Hero 4 Black and it works fine.

I would like to have the lens correction of the Yi, but if the camera doesn't work properly, lens correction is of no value.

Also if it doesn't work properly it doesn't matter at all that it costs half as much.

I am tempted to remove my preceding EMails, but rather than that I would just like to say:

Don't Buy a Yi 4K, Hugues has real experience using it for what we use a camera for and it is obviously a complete DUD!

Maybe it will get better and certainly more Companies will be coming out with them, but for the time being at least you know that what you get from GoPro will at least work.

    Best Regards,

    Gary

I have purchased, troes and returned the supposedly Gopro killer, YI 4K camera. i am very disappointed by the camera:

-first the video fluidity was very bad. My 60$ Mobius did better in comparison. The slight video stutter I saw in every video, whatever the reaolution or fps setting, just killed the main advantage of the camera,

-secondly, the 5Ghz Wifi does not work, only 2.4 does. I had got a new corrective firmware to test from YI support without success. Worth, when i finally succeeded to get an access point from the camera on the 5G setting, it was actually in the 2,4 G band! (measured with a wifi analyzer)

-you will not be able to use any SD card brand or model with this camera. The most asked support question from users is why their SD card is not recognized by the camera. There are only a few SD card models that are officially recommended. Even though lots of users had problems with the recommended models

-you will not be able to use Gopro cases, it is not compatible.

-once you use a case you can't access the settings!

-you will not be able to use out of the box a Gopro gimbal: the weight distribution is different from a Gopro and you will need to rebalance with weights and change the gimbal controller settings for optimal stability

I am also disappointed by biased reviews on this camera, done for most by youtubers who got the camera for free for review. The hype is raging now.

i will wait for the price of a Gopro 4 to go down with the launch of the gopro 5. It will cost me more but at least i will get a finished working product, i hope.

  • Hi Rob,

The Yi 4k weighs 3.4 oz versus Blacks 3.1oz and the Yi is 6 mm wider, 1 mm taller and depth is about the same.

So no it is not quite the same size as the black, but could easily be "fitted" to many GoPro Gimbals.

It is also not clear whether the Yi has an HDMI output.

The tech specs say that it is compatible with a TV with an optional cable but no mention is specifically made of an HDMI output.

I do know that World Wide a lot of people are already using the Yi's older standard version on various consumer drones and are happy with it.

They have upgraded stabilization and lens correction to work at resolutions higher than 1080P but not full 4K.

The lens correction feature in particular seems to work very well and stabilization has been compared to Sonys Action Cams.

Lens correction plus image stabilization at the same time have not produced optimal results.

Since the Iphone 5 and later and IPAD mini and many Android phones and tablets support both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ WiFi, the 5 GHZ real time preview feature of the Yi on non-interfering 5GHZ is a real asset.

And apparently the latency is better than GoPro as well.

We are bound to be seeing more of it soon.

    Best Regards,

    Gary

  • I must confess my modified hero4 black does a good job. But my total cost was $600, including aftermarket lens. I have a Git 2 that you can get with non fisheye lens as stock and it does PWM control through the USB port and does decent video: 2k @ 60f/s. Cost: $159. And they interact with users on RCgroups and actively update firmware. Mostly I only need 1080 resolution anyway.
  • It does.
  • Does a Yi fit in a GoPro gimbal?
