Flight Monitoring Via Smart Watch

Hi Diydrones Community,

We just started to develop flight monitoring app for smart watches, We are aiming to have important features like when battery is critic watch will vibrate and warn the user, on the other hand drone pilots can voice command to change flight modes over watch(this will be hard to develop, we will do our best). Of course flight critical information can be also monitored on the watch.

We will add artificial horizon, however; this may not be useful since we can see the artificial horizon over phone, may be drone pilots wants this as a dedicated artificial horizon. We will also include a professional compass, barometer, and altimeter functions.

Currently we already developed a free app called CompassX for android wear smart watches, i think it will be very handy at the field for now. Let us know what you think and what you want?

Thanks.

  • @Johnatan, Tower Wear is an opensource mini-GCS on Android Wear, so feel free to contribute if you'd like :)

    Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.o3dr.android.dp.wear

    Github link: https://github.com/DroidPlanner/tower-wear

@Mustafa TULU, Tower Wear is open source, so you could contribute to the UX if you'd like, or fork the code to speed up development for your own Android Wear app.

Additionally, Tower Wear is built on top of DroneKit-Android (http://android.dronekit.io/https://github.com/DroidPlanner/DroneKit-Android) which is an Android SDK to easily develop mobile apps for drones, and which would speed up your development time by allowing you to avoid reimplementing the (backend) wheel.

  • Gotta admit that attitude indicator on a wrist has the cool factor.  Add the useful functions already mentioned and I might just want a smartwatch.

  • 3DR's Tower app has an Android Wear component, called Tower Wear. haven't gotten to use it yet, but it looks neat.

  • That should say 'of little use for drones'. Damn autocorrect!
  • Very nice. I have an lg watch r, and it's been great. Although after two months it died for no apparent reason. Luckily I bought it from the play store and they replaced it free.

I wouldn't bother with an artificial horizon for this. I think they are of little use for dinner, even on a bigger screen. Stuff like speed, battery and altitude readings are far more useful. Also an RTL button would be great. Perhaps also show major errors (eg geofence breach, low battery)
  • If Android version is open source I can contribute in developing and improvement :)

  • Exactly, as Charles said, you can use it independent, at the above video, the watch is at airplane mode which means no connection. You don't need an lg phone just any android with 4.4.2 software will work. Believe me this watch is powerfull than pebble.

  • no you can use the watch independently and it is an android app on the watch :)

  • MR60

do you need a LG smartphone to use this LG Watch ? If yes, you might as well use an android app on the smartphone with a bigger screen than the Watch. Pebble understood this and are considering the Watch as a....Watch, not as a smartphone.

  • Yes it is LG G Watch R, totally recommending, thinking to buy one? I bought it from THIS seller with express shipping got it in one week.
