Panasonic’s A100 HD Action Cam

Panasonic claims its new wearable HD camcorder will be perfect for adrenaline junkies and recreation-seekers alike—but can it compete in a market that's already dominated by GoPro, the clear winner in our recent action cam test?

The HX-A100's water-proof and dust-proof case houses hardware capable of filming 1920 x 1080 video at 60 fps, 1280 x 720 video at 120 fps, or 640 x 360 video at 240 fps. It comes packing Wi-Fi, so can be used to broadcast live streams on Ustream, while its battery—tucked away in the remote processing unit—will let it film for up to 140 minutes on a single charge. The small lens unit weights an ounce and is connected to the 4 ounce main unit by a 2-foot cable....

This might solve some of the issues with balancing.  Also much less wind resistance then the cubic GoPro.

  • But for Multicopter viewing I like my Sony Action Cam. The GH3 (that we use at work due to rigs we have from, GH1's) records at higher fps in 1080p mode, but the Sony images just look more representative of the scene--and the colors are outstanding. Chose the sony mainly for color representation. And so with my Y6 camera mount, the stabilization feature has gotten rid of some of the jelloing effect. Of course, with so many camera mounts, your results will vary.

This thing looks to fall under the same traits, but is pretty large from that photo and creates more mounting issues in the long run.

  • The Contour is pretty close to perfect.  My ContourHD 1080 doesn't have any output, but maybe the new ones do.  I know they have a Wifi or Blutooth output, but that won't work at long range.

  • I wonder why GoPro doesn't come out with a streamlined model.  Something tells me that my search for the "perfect" camera is going to end up like my search for the perfect plane... it doesn't exist.

  • Wow, the camera head is about the same size as the entire Contour camera!  And the box is entirely too big.  Sorry, but this is an epic fail unless the vido quality is out of this world.

I actually really, really really like the physical attributes of the JVC action camera.  It has a proper 1/4" threaded mount point.  Two of them in fact  so you can mount it from the side or bottom.  Machined aluminum casing.  And isn't a stupid box like the GoPro.  Just too bad the video sucks.

If only the Contour had analog out, it would be way better than the GoPro for FPV since it's actually aerodynamic.

  • Looks interesting but its bigger than it looks from that photo.

  • Hard to find any specs on it, but from what I found, it appears not to have an analogue out, which severly limits FPV use. The gopro seems to be the only one of this type of camera that bothers with video out, which of course helps maintain its popularity with FPV users.

Anyone know if the cable can be detached. There may be some hacking opportunities to take the camera part and connect to other boards if someone could figure out what the wires do (ie. send some proprietry digital signal or just analogue video signal).

  • Big FPV Question is: Does it do Analog Live video out? Or even live HDMI out?

  • That's pretty nice! Much more versatile than the relatively bulky GoPro.

  • Developer

    That has some potential!
