Want to do mission planning or setup with Tower on Android or MAVPilot on iOS without the hassle of janky cables? What you need is a direct Wifi connection to your drone. The new Pixhawk/APM-compatible Wifi radio from HobbyKing is perfect for this, and just $19.97.  I almost exclusively use mobile apps and wifi now -- 400m range is fine for setup, planning and telemetry. Leave that laptop and those cables at home!

Tired of having to program your APM / Pixhawk system by wire? The APM / Pixhawk Wireless Wifi Radio Module is the perfect solution! This simple yet effective module replaces the 3DR data transmission module and frees you from the limitation of a USB cable. The system is suitable for all flight controllers with TTL interface.

The Wifi Radio module is supplied with both Pixhawk and APM compatible wire harnesses for quick and easy setup.

Features:
• Wireless functionality for Pixhawk and APM
• Compact and lightweight system supplied with Pixhawk and APM wire harnesses
• Replaces the 3DR data transmission system module
• Supplied with Pixhawk and APM wire harnesses

  • Have a few questions, is it possible to use one of these modules to control my quad with just an android phone or tablet, in short range, line of sight?

    http://www.dx.com/p/esp-07-esp8266-serial-wi-f-wireless-module-w-bu...

Being a noob, interested if is just a matter of plug&play or there is some programing involved?

What FCB do you recommend to use with these? Have a 30.5x30.5mm board moun on my frame, would be nice to fit.

What app do I need? Can I do mission planning as well?

I'm hiking a lot, and need a way to control my 150mm quad on the go, but not want to carry a bulky radio with me, just want to be able to get my quad up in the air and have a look of the surrounding area and the trail ahead, or send it on a short missions to get a look of an area further ahead...

    Looking for a simplest solution.

@gustavo use this https://github.com/dogmaphobic/mavesp8266 for FW and https://pixhawk.org/peripherals/8266 instructions.

@festlv I should try out your solution :)

  • @gustavo: I can assure you, this one works: https://github.com/festlv/mavbridge (I'm the author).

I have only tested it using ESP12 modules (SMD ones, without pins), and my custom hardware board: https://www.tindie.com/products/festlv/mavbridge/

  • did anybody found a successful way to link telemetry over wifi, using the esp8266 with a pixhawk , most like the development for pixracer , ??

  • Stefano, same for me, the Artificial Horizons works, but fetching parameters locks mission planner up. Strange thing is that it used to work for me, on several planes and PCs, now none of them works....

  • I have Pixhawk with firmware 3.3.3.

I have progrmmaed my module esp8266 with "https://github.com/dogmaphobic/mavesp8266".

I can connect and change parameter, but i can't connect with Mission Planner.

Send a "ping 192.168.4.1" respons OK.

When I connect to the "Mission Planner", I get "done".
When reading the parameters starts, it stays locked.
