Short clip of Memorial Day DIY Drones Fly-in

Chris needed to do some prep for the upcoming SparkFun Challenge, so he asked if anybody wanted to get together for a Memorial Day fly-in.  I drove up with Andreas and Charlie Burtoff; there were about 15-20(?) people all together, although I didn't actually count.

Here's a shakycam of Andreas flying the Zii, a hex, some of the flyers, and Andreas with his fine-looking FPV mask.

  • Charlie, Ok, I see so it only took off once you throttled up a bit?  Very strange, and scary.  Is this with a 9X?  What do the logs show?  Any input registered at all?  What made it come down?

    Chris, will do... [update: done!]

@Mark. Not fixed yet. Maybe reupload and edit the post with a new embed code?

  • Good Tune up run

  • @R_Lefebvre It was at zero throttle when I armed. My usual procedure is to give just enough throttle to get the props moving after arming then try to get to just under half throttle pretty quickly to get up and out of the ground effect. On this flight I simply gave it the smallest amount of throttle input to spin the props up and off she went... I had zero control (was rocking the sticks all over the place with no response). At one point I turned off my radio to see if the failsafe settings would trigger a RTL but no luck. I was using a HK Orange receiver and spectrum module in my Futaba transmitter. This setup has worked fine for a few years now. I use this to fly blade micro helis almost daily. I might change my RC control system to FRsky or one of the UHF systems dunno yet...

The tiny amount of damage to the quad is amazing, I also fly single rotor CP helis and your absolutely correct on that. I did trash the lipo (still works but looks like it got run over by a truck!).

whoops, blame it on the tube!  I applied the stabilization mode, didn't like it, and backed it out, which flipped the image!  I think it's fixed now.

Or, this was the long-distance cam from Australia!

  • Mark (and everyone else, in case you didn't know) -- You can fix the video orientation in youtube.  Go to the video, click "Enhancements", and you should see some rotation buttons.

You can also use the "Stabilize" button to help with handheld shakiness (I wish youtube would give viewers the option to do that on all videos, regardless of whether the video creator used it).

  • Regards to Charlies video... how did it arm if it was at full throttle?

I gotta get me a quad.  I can't believe that.  If my heli fell like that, it would be completely destroyed.  My last crash, it just tipped over on the ground, and did more far more damage than yours suffered crashing from 1 mile up, onto pavement.

    :(
