Hey guys i have been keeping an eye on the thermal imaging market trends.  Recently FLIR launched their new thermal imaging camera for the iphone 5!!  Thermal cameras traditionally sell for thousands of dollars for even an entry level unit but with the introduction of the FLIR ONE thermal camera these prices are being challenged.  The FLIR ONE is designed for the iphone 5 and retails for $350.  Well now FLIR has some competition!!  Seek thermal has just launched (9/25/2014) there thermal imaging camera for android and iphone which will retail for $200.  Some specs  of each below.....

FLIR ONE:  http://www.flir.com/flirone/

  • Fits iphone 5 and 5s only (it is designed to mount to a supplied i phone cover)
  • Thermal image resolution???? (uses their Lepton thermal camera)
  • Uses FLIR's thermal mixing (basically its the thermal image with a visible light image overlay to better outline the actual image)

OPEN BETA TEST: Low Cost, Open Source, Streaming Thermal Camera

We’re looking for people who might be interested in testing a low cost thermal camera designed specifically for drones. The systems is based on the SEEK Thermal Camera and offers simple plug and play operation. It will connect to your DJI Phantom 2 Vision’s Wifi network when it’s powered on.

The images rival ‘pro-grade’ thermal cameras, but at only $500 this one costs 1/3 as much. It offers a 204x156 pixel thermal image at 9hz in 8-bit color or black & white.

If you’re interested in participating in this beta test, please message me or send email to the address at the end of the video. Testers will receive a fully functional streaming thermal camera system, downloadable software and app updates, plus a substation discount off of the retail price.

I wish I could give these away for free, but I can’t afford that. The fee for beta testers is $500. Please forgive the crudeness of the attached video. I’m a programmer and drone builder, not a videographer.

  • @Bill - that's awesome, I'm very interested!

    Do you have any footage?

When I looked a while ago at connecting the seek to a raspberry or similar, the problem seemed to be that there's a lot of magic done in software to get rid of the calibration pixels and gradients.

I have heard of companies like this one: http://www.bigapplebuddy.com/seek-thermal-international-shipping/

  • For I don't see ability for direct shipment to Europe, but I'll try different way ;-)

I see that you're in Poland.  Can you purchase the seek thermal camera there?

  • I am :-)

If anyone is interested, I managed to get the SEEK THERMAL camera to stream via WiFi using a Raspberry Pi 2.  I'm next going to try to see if I can connect an analog video transmitter to it for IR FPV.  (The Pi has an AV out on it).

This would be the only sub $500 solution for IR FPV that I have seen.  On the Pi it can also record to an SD card.

I'm scaling the 204x156 image up to 640x480
