What a simple orthomosaic and DEM can do

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3odtsy6l_KE

Using Orthomosaic and Digital Elevation Model to create 3 D model is nothing new. But normally it will require lots of computing power and knowledge. Skyline's TerraBuilder and TerraExplorer make it easy for the average people to make 3D video from an orthomosaic and DEM. For sure there are lot's of other functions within the software, I think just a 3D fly around video create by my recent aerial mapping work will enable my client understand his land better as he can view the area at difference angle and prospective.

I just learn some very basic function and will need proper training to fully utilised the powerful software. I find very limited resource in the net to help the learning process. Any idea ?

Hi Waladi, according to Agisoft, the resolution is 9.6 cm per pixel. You may need significant investment both in time and finance to set up a reliable long range multi rotor.
Hi Stanley, he is always well come.
  • Great Mr Keeyen :-D

Out of UAV topic: By the way I got a friend in Sandakan just learning how to fly RC. He bought an excel 2000 kit from me about a month ago. He just screwed up his ASP 46 engine because overheating too lean he said. I suggest he join rc club in Sandakan to learn flying. Now he bought OS engine. Don't know if he already maiden it.

    thanks

  • Hi Dan & Keeyen,

Agreed with both of you, plane will always be more efficient & relatively less cost compare to multirotor due to its aerodynamic nature.

Since multirotor have their own advantages such hovering on specific spot for more specific needs (higher accuracy, surveillance, etc ) and required small space to take-off & land with fully autonomous flight, it's interest me a lot.

According to Mission planner, 300m alt flight will produce ~ 11cm/pixel ground resolution using S100, is that what you got from the image?

    Hi Joshua.

This is a oil palm replanting project. The land has been planted with oil palm before. After about 20 years or so from the date of planting, those palms will become tall and bear less fruit thus uneconomical to continue the cultivation. Company will chop down the old trees and plant with new better clone palm.
I do not have the " before data " but 20 or 30 years ago it was a forest.
  • Keeyen,

That is some heartbreaking work, my friend.

Slightly off topic: do you have any 'before' data? It would be interesting to put a different time scale on this information -- building a timelapse video showing this spread across the forest.

I do agree with Dan Murray. The multi rotor you are looking at has yet to prove itself to fly in windy condition. It is also expensive at this moment.
Only one flight to cover the whole area. 300 meter altitude.
My Canon S100 setting. TV. 1/1600 shutter speed. Auto ISO. WB: Cloudy. Manual focus set to infinity. Switch off IS. I seldom see blur picture when fly at 300 meter altitude. Hope this help.

  • Waladi, I am not Keeyen, but if I may: it may be worth your time to try and learn how to fly planes. I was in the same boat as you and ended up buying a PC simulator as well as a trainer plane, and got it down in no time. I'm glad I did. For aerial survey, planes are much, much more efficient.

Also, the S100 is a good camera, so long as you tune your exposure settings well.

  • Hi Keeyen,

Amazing setup... do you map all 600 Ha on single flight mission? What is your Altitude setting?

Since I'm very bad pilot and cannot land a plane so with similar purpose, I'm building different endurance quadcopter to achieve > 40min flight and with the same speed of 15 m/s (54 Km/h)  and carrying Sony Nex 5N with flat map 2 Axis gimbal.

Attached is the spec and calculation, if you may look in to it and give feedback, I will very much appreciate it.

How do you feel about the picture result from S100?

I get almost 50% blurry image due to its floating lens.

    Hi Waladi and Phil Gordon

The area is about 600 Ha. My equipment is FX 79 with APM. More info here and also here. I'm using Canon S100 GPS with CHDK. Flight speed is about 60 KM/H on average. Total flight time is 50 minutes. I'm using Terrabuilder and TerraExplorer. I'm still waiting for my local reseller to confirm the price. This is a " trial " copy

  • Hey Keeyen,

Looking great - That looks like the Photomesh/Acute3D module. Is it?

(if it is = mucho $$$!)

Want to second Waladi - what setup did you use?
