Typical load factors for fixed wing UAVs?

Started Aug 11, 2016 0 Replies

What are typical load factors that UAVs are designed for?I'm currently designing my UAV for a ultimate load factor of 10 which seems plenty sufficient for it's mission, surveillance. The greatest…Continue

Backup flight computers?

Started Jun 7, 2016 0 Replies

So suppose the primary flight computer, a Pixhawk fails, unless there is a parachute or a backup system, that plane is going down and it might not end well. So, is there any way to setup a system for…Continue

Using custom sensors?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Lauren Yuen Apr 2. 1 Reply

Is there a way to utilize custom sensors that APM does not support?Either directly or indirectly, I need a way to know what the health of a gas engine (temperature, RPM, etc). Here are some possible…Continue

Gas fuel managament with Pixhawk?

Started May 30, 2016 0 Replies

I know about the Gem Fuel Guardian some have referenced on this site but there is little info on it. It's not inside the APM help documents so I assume it has not yet been made to work officially. So…Continue

Lauren Yuen replied to Jonathan Wong's discussion Using custom sensors?
"Hi Jonathan, I am in a similar situation as you, what did you decide? My current plan (quick fix) is to just use an existing mavlink message to send my data to the GroundStation and display my custom sensor data as some other existing value in the…"

"From page 3 of this thread, looks like you've got a hardpoint in the foam wing for the boom. Can you share how you made those?"

Jonathan Wong replied to Tom Moore's discussion V-tail sizing example - but is it correct?
"Absolutely. Stick a rocket on a barn door and it'll fly for too. The engineering comes in when one tries to optimize the design to make it work well and efficiently."

Jonathan Wong replied to Tom Moore's discussion V-tail sizing example - but is it correct?
"Perhaps you might want to do some flight testing? I'm also designing a UAV while keeping in mind modularity which makes it extremely easy to make modifications with minimal cost. For example, a carbon fiber tail boom tubes and be shortened if…"

Typical load factors for fixed wing UAVs?

What are typical load factors that UAVs are designed for?I'm currently designing my UAV for a ultimate load factor of 10 which seems plenty sufficient for it's mission, surveillance. The greatest loads I can expect are from gusts and a very bad landing. I've also given consideration to the ability to execute a 60deg banking turn at max speed. Excessive? Perhaps but still falls withing my expectations for weight. Following a prototype, I'll spend more time developing a more optimized airframe.See More

Research paper on quadcopter failsafe

I came across an IEEE paper regarding quadcopter failsafes by Mark Mueller in which despite the loss of one or multiple propellers/motors, the quadcopter can still be controlled to the ground. It's pretty incredible stuff and would be great to see in APM so I just wanted to bring it to the attention of the developers.Research paper:…See More
