L1 Control vs. Crosstrack Control

I know that the L1 controller has been out for about two years, but since I have had opportunity to use both L1 and crosstack, I still wonder if crosstrack did not actually provide better control of the desired flight path. What I truly liked about crosstrack was the abililty to set an approach angle of zero (I believe it was) and simply have the plane make a beeline to the next waypoint after it executed its turn. You would use other parameter adjustments to keep the plane from wavering back…See More

Max Bank Angle Set at 45°, but APM2 Holds at 30°

Although I have the maximum bank angle set to 45°, my plane would not achieve a bank angle over 30° when flying in FBWA or AUTOTUNE modes.  In the air, it really appeared to be even less and the plane could not achieve a complete turn without switching back to manual mode.  However, the log does indicate a maximum bank of 30° in either of these modes.  I checked this on the ground and, while holding full left or right aileron, APM does begin to compensate for the bank as soon as I tilt the…See More

About Me:
Longtime R/C enthusiast. Interested in aviation in general.
My model airplane and hobby web site:
Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest
Fascinated with UAVs for many years. Have read a lot of books and articles on the subject and still do. Knew that homemade UAVs were possible based on Maynard Hill's transatlantic flight, but had no idea how far along the DIY community had come in the meantime. Incredible.

To anyone who landed here from the link on my own web site, have a look around DIY Drones. I think you'll be amazed at what you find. It might not happen soon, but I hope to build my own DIY UAV at some point.

Free Book Coupon for my DIY Drones Friends

Posted on March 13, 2013 at 9:43pm 11 Comments

A number of years ago while I was doing research for a little story I was working on I stumbled upon DIY Drones and, later, sUAS News.  Hanging out on the DIY Drones forum, building my own amateur UAV and other life-changing events became distractions to finishing my story.  Well, I finally got around to doing just that, i.e. finishing it.

This has very much been a DIY effort from writing the story, to putting together the simple cover, to self-publishing and on to…

Installing APM2 in a SkyFly Max

I know that this is simply another APM2 installation, but I thought I would post it anyway in case anyone might be looking for suitable airframes for their DIY drone.  Also, this is kind of exciting for me since I am finally doing my DIY drone project and like to share my activity.  While my…

The National UAV (sUAS) Debate Continues

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 4:23am 2 Comments

The mainstream news stories about UAVs getting into the NAS are almost getting commonplace, and maybe that's partly the idea of this post, i.e. to point that out.  Still, maybe we should stay on top of what's being said.

One problem with these short radio spots, in this case seven minutes with…

Hi Paul,

I notice you live in Prior Lake, MN. I'm up in Circle Pines. All my gear is ripped apart right now after traveling to do a demo, but when I get it all back together and if we have a nice day at some point, I'd be happy to show you my setup in action.

Hi Paul,

I am located in Swarthmore, PA and interested in experimenting with some UAVs once the weather gets a little better. I saw that you created a York, PA google group and thought it might be worthwhile to meet up in the future... I have no previous experience with remote aviation but am eager to learn, pick up things pretty quickly.

Hi Paul

I really interest on you TWENTY YEARS OF MICRO TURBOJET ENGINE post. I'm beginner on that topic, but i try to make it work by my self. of course i will apply on my UAV drones, all this time we use JetCat. Now it's time to make it self. Ohh, by the way can you help me find of "boeing Bird of Prey" design? I really interest on that plane.

Dear Paul, just want to start with one such project, I watched your 3D drawings in SketchUp and I am very impressed. Can I get a copy of your RQ-2A Pioneer UAV aircraft 3d files

Thank you.

Hi Paul,

I tried out your outline.wrl file, but I get an error message back that says:

Failed to process file, may be empty file or contain unsupported geometry types, etc.

Any other ideas...?

Hi Andrew,

No other ideas, I'm afraid.  SketchUp's export function might not be all that great.  I was able to export simple 2D line drawings to dxf for example, but an attempt at 3D did not work.

HI Mr.Paul,

I am Zarnesoe. I am very interesting about your RQ-2A Pioneer UAV project. Could I get somethings as like as 2d line drawings of this project? I would try to build your project. My email address is Thanks.
