Hi Ron,

Re the large scale quad, the answers are simple - No, No, and No...

It will never fly. The tilt rotor concept does not scale very well at all. The blade diameter is large - around 1meter, and when spinning at 1500rpm it is almost impossible to tilt- the centrifical force is huge and the Gyro effect overpowering, so the blade resists tilt.

The force on the tilt servo and the interconnecting levers is huge. In addition, when scaling up, the weight grows quicker than the lift benifits - to prevent that I used TREX 650 Aluminium tail rotor assemblies for the rotor pitch control mechanism - they simply could not take the loads of the blades spinning - I was hoping as a trial they might, but not at all! I was trying to make the tail rotor assy do the work of the main rotor assy...

So it was a very neat, time consuming flop...But I learned a lot. Tilt rotors are limited to small diameter blades, or custom rotor heads from very esoteric and light weight materials...
