Thor Larsen commented on Gary Mortimer's blog post No hiding behind AC 91-57 anymore
"RocketMan, I am totally on-board with what you are saying and can't help but agree. Having been involved in modeling now for several decades I also have a feel for the issue at hand.  That issue is primarily: What was once a hobby that…"

Thor Larsen commented on Gary Mortimer's blog post No hiding behind AC 91-57 anymore
"In reality it is the people (us) that read forums like this one, and are interested in "doing the right thing" that are getting all "bunched up" about all this.  The real issue is that these machines quads, planes, etc. that…"

John Bond replied to Thor Larsen's discussion Does the GPS (and compass) need to be entirely out from under the main blades? in the group ArduCopter (traditional heli) user group
"The spinning heli blade itself doesn't cause GPS reception problems.   On manned helis GPS works just fine.  You can even do fixed integer work (centimeter level accuracy) with a GPS antenna under the blades of manned or unmanned…"

"My biggest hell uses 800mm carbon fiber blades.  These are quite big but the only problem I have is when I stow the blades both over the top of the GPS.  When the blades are extended and not parked over the GPS module, everything is fine…"

Dennis replied to Thor Larsen's discussion Does the GPS (and compass) need to be entirely out from under the main blades? in the group ArduCopter (traditional heli) user group
"Me thinks it might make a diff if the blades are Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass (cf or frp) and then it may make an even bigger difference if the GPS/compass were to be placed directly under the ubiquitius lead weights found in most if not all trad heli…"

"Rob, Was thinking I would need to make my own cables, but I also didn't think the blades would really pose that big a problem.  More worried about the compass.  Will be setting up a PixHawk for this application, but will obviously…"

"Thanks David.  Next question... if I may.  Where did you get the extensions for the GPS that were that long, and, did you have the compass in that same unit (I am thinking that putting the compass that far back would not necessarily be a…"

David Boulanger replied to Thor Larsen's discussion Does the GPS (and compass) need to be entirely out from under the main blades? in the group ArduCopter (traditional heli) user group
"Thor, In my opinion yes.  I have had mine mounted both under the blades and on the end of the boom by the vertical fin.  When the gps was mounted under the blades there were times when my satellite count would suddenly drop by 4 or…"

Does the GPS (and compass) need to be entirely out from under the main blades?

Hello.  I am beginning the process of taking a Century Swift 16 (a bit vintage but light and strong - about 550 rotor diameter) and converting it, with a Pixhawk, to an autonomous machine.  I feel that this would be a good alternative to my quadcopter for certain applications.Chief question, to start, does the GPS need to totally be out from under the rotor blade?  This is a rather short coupled platform and I don't know if it would really be feasible.I look forward to moving into the area of…See More

"Randy, as you are the only one that I see here using the MB1260, have you done more than simply sodering it up (i.e. are you using full shielding, etc.)?  I have it set up and ready to mount, but based on everyones past issues, I have been…"

Thor Larsen commented on Stefan Gofferje's blog post 184cm supercopter with heli-blades
"It seems that those prop holders allow adjustment of pitch when setting up the vehicle, but once it is flying the pitch remains the same (heli blades have no inherent "pitch" per. se., so it would be a necessity to be able to adjust that…"

Thor Larsen replied to peter christian's discussion 10000mah Battery capacity - seriously?
"I have a MaxAmps 10000 4s lipo, and it works pretty well for my quad (3DR with 880kv motors and larger props).  However, the flight time doesn't really double, as it takes quite a bit more power to lift it.  I switched to a 5000, and…"

"Had the same thing happen today.  Alt hold was great.. but when I put it on Loiter it would hang on for a second, and then race off in one direction or another... needing to be corralled back under normal control."
