So how did you go Phil?

  • Moderator

Ah shame, if I had known you were going down there, I would have kept the day free.  I only have part of the day available.  Good luck though!

  • Anyone interested in going to the Ballarat spot tomorrow?

The weather isn't supposed to be great, but I will go either way as I have some stuff to do at Clunes in the arvo. And you never know, it was supposed to be 35km/h winds last time but it was very still when I was there.

I'll be testing my RFD900 radio with APM on the electric plane. I hope to fly it with the joystick from my trailer with only GPS and artificial horizon. Would be good to have a spotter!

    All,

Just a heads up that if you're looking for a < 5kg scale for your workshop (or looking to replace one like I was), I found one in Woolworths for $20.  So if you're not really wanting to spend over $50 for those 'fancy' ones, which would do the same, check it out.

    Gents,

This is what I was referring to this morning - throttle failsafe.

Keep in mind that the params have changed from the original blog, so make sure you check out pages 3 and 4.

  • At work we use HP Profile Cutting P/L. They hold aluminium stocks of various thicknesses. I've never seen anyone hold stocks of CF or FG though. My vacuum forming rig is quite small, good for wing tips, RC car bodies, servo covers, small electronics boxes etc. Its just a 900mm wide kitchen oven and a vacuum cleaner attached to an MDF box with holes. Put the Lexan framed sheet in oven, wait till droopy, quickly take it out and place over positive mold and turn on vacuum. Check YouTube vids. Plenty of people do it for RC car bodies etc. Can't make it this Sunday :-( but hopefully will finally maiden the plane this Sat!

Phil, when you get that all set up - if you had a material supply, cut and delivery service you would make a fortune. Most places I rjng say they can cut anything but cant supply anything. With the ease of getting things from china or mexico exactly how you want it, it is no wonder local businesses struggle.

Hey all - just a heads up that some of us will be going flying this Sunday.  Probably Royal Park - just behind the children's hospital.  Be good to head out and go for a fly again, but I'm also going to be trying out various fail safes and see how we go.

Phil, that sounds awesome, however, don't really want to wait 4 months. (:

But what are you doing with the vacuum forming?  Are you doing that now?

And Tim, thanks for the heads...  They look spot on.  I'll give them a call tomorrow.

  • For stuff we cannot do ourselves, Deakin uses a company in Mulgrave... I think it's called MKA Waterjet Cutting (or something like that). CF is, AFAIK, best cut with water.. but then, I'm not a materials or machining expert.
