About Me:

Built my first tricopter in April 2013 and am completely hooked. I work as a consultant digital director for a number of companies.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I'm interested in aerial filming as well as exploring new applications. I also want to make building a multicopter accessible to many more people by running workshops and producing simple guides.

Ian Lyons commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Hexo+ makes it to $1 million on Kickstarter
"Let's ignore the massively false (and dangerous) expectations set by the marketing video for a sec - this project has definitively shown there's a market for this type of thing. I wonder how readily these people will accept the rather more limited…"

Ian Lyons replied to Bill Bonney's discussion Indiegogo & Kickstarter Crowd Sourced Projects discussion
"Yes, technically R10 did deliver something - shame it didn't actually fly anywhere near like what they showed in their videos. I spun mine up only to have it flip violently - the forums indicated this was normal so I binned it. They took on a an…"

Ian Lyons commented on Roger Sollenberger's blog post Follow-Me Mode: Available Today, Free in DroidPlanner 2.0
"Is it possible to program follow me together with ROI - so the drone circles a moving object, keeping the camera pointed at it? Not worried about avoiding other obstacles - yet."

Ian Lyons commented on Ian Lyons's blog post APM at the heart of the World First...
"mP1 - totally understand that you don't care for the video - it was directed at the advertising world. As ludicrous as the premise was, it still had to be built and it still had to fly. The APM was the only flight controller that I found that could…"

"Thanks Quadzimodo - and thanks for dragging me out to fly/crash it in the early stages. I probably wouldn't have made it in time otherwise."

"Very nice build - hadn't though to wrap the moon gel in glad wrap - amazing how much gunk it attracts.
I hope whoever finds it does the right thing.

Ian Lyons commented on Carles Gelada's blog post Irresponsable and Immoral
"I became interested in drones after backing the R10 Quadcopter on kickstarter. It arrived six months late, was well undercooked, incredibly unreliable, poorly designed and flat out dangerous. The worst thing is that UAIR stopped communicating,…"

"Great point R_Lefebvre. I hate that ning doesn't show your name - way to built community.
I love visualisation tools like this because they show people what's going on in a digestible way and also reveal the omissions, hopefully allowing us to shore…"

Ian Lyons commented on Simon Kerr's blog post Concerns about lack of UAV regulation in New Zealand - complete with sensationalist headline.
"Okay, so where is someone with a RTF quad supposed to go to learn to fly safely and responsibly? I've done lots of googling and forum searching and as far as I can tell, there's nowhere (in Australia at least) that someone can can go to learn.
Yes,…"
