The normal behavior for "motors" command, would be : roll right -> right motors on, roll left -> left motors on, pitch up -> front motors on, pitch down -> back motors on.
Make sure also you don't have any channel mixing active in your radio. If you have it in ACRO mode, channels should be working without mixing (channels working independentlly), if you have it in HELI mode you may have some mixing on.

Did you ever figured the problem?
Dane you are ready to fly.
If you have never flown a copter learn with a simulator or a coaxial small copter.
I recently soldered to the + Lipo and hit the Ardu unit. The IMU is fine.
All is replaceable.
Don't hurt your dog.

Just got twin 1.2ghz diversity receivers and a new lightweight cam with great low light visibility for night flying. My GPS snapped off its PCB so I need to order a new one or try to solder it.
I'd like to run Arducopter on my fpv quads simply because of the GPS location so if I have an accident, get stuck or crash I can take my laptop and drive toward it...
I have a Pixim Seawolf 690TVL for my 450mm quad, so I may run Arducopter on that just for the telemetry. What I really want is RSSI. Glad you like the dog, hes my service dog and is with me 24/7... Name is Ralph!
