I would like to build a UAV
First of all thank you, this is a great website and will help me loads :)
And also can I say, I admit. I am a complete noob to this forum, which is why I didn't know where to post this topic. Sorry.
Anyway, on with my project:
I plan to build a relatively cheap UAV which can fly around 2 miles away, with a wireless camera mounted, and a reciever which connects to my laptop via USB and has the ability to record. I don't want anything too fancy, no auto-pilot or anything. just the basics
Here's what I propose to use
A scale predator UAV RC Electric airplane with a 74.8in wingspan
A 2.4GHz Wireless Camera (note I will not be using the Reciever that comes with it)
A 2.4GHz Wireless USB camera reciever & recording Software
TP Link 2.4GHz 15dbi Outdoor Omni-Directional Antenna
Now, here are my problems and questions.
I understand that the USB reciever needs a power source, but because I plan to set up the station outside, I was thinking either somehow getting solar power or using power from the laptop via USB. So what should I use to power it? Also I am British, so it would need to configure with british outputs etc.
Would this camera and reciever work together? What range would they have?
I understand that I need a radio, any reccomendations?
Would all this equipment work smoothly together?
How long would the batteries last in the UAV?
What modifications would i need to make in order to make the camera fit the UAV?
Is there anything else I have missed? any reccomendations?
And finally, is this worth it?

Hi Ash,
Just thought I would add to the above comments, 900 mhz is the mobile phone frequency here in the UK, you may want to stay well away from any equipment which use this frequency. Also the 2.4 ghz radio equipment will not get on so well if you have 2.4 ghz video equipment.
Do lots of research and as Johann has said read the FAQ section.

If it's live video and you're flying RC via video goggle or a monitor, that's called "First Person View (FPV). If you're just flying with regular RC but there's a video or still camera onboard, that's called "Aerial Photography (AP)".
We don't really focus on either here. We're oriented around autonomous flight, which is what a real UAV does. Video is just the "payload". -

Chris did not shoot down the Predator just because of the size (he actually owns several of them for testing), it because they are not well balanced/configured for R/C use.
Being short-coupled, they are difficult to control and have some nasty flight characteristics, especially for beginners.
Unfortunately they are popular with persons new to the community because of the recognizable profile and romantic attraction.

Ash CAP 722, your system is a UAS the correct term for such a system these days and flights outside of VLOS with a camera are illegal in the UK as such.

How do you define a RC plane with camera on board as a UAS?
"■UAV: Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. In the military, these are increasingly called Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), to reflect that the aircraft is just part of a complex system in the air and on the ground. Ground-based autonomous robots are called Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) and robot submersibles are called Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). Robot boats are called Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs)." from FAQs front page of Terms .
How is what he wants to do a Complicated/complex system?

UAS and sUAS are the current correct terms. (RPAS is the up and coming one)
