MinimOSD setup without APM

Hello all!

I am just getting into the FPV world after flying LOS for about a year. I just received the 3DR Video/OSD System Kit as my gateway into this world. I had some troubles setting it up, but finally did get it all to work with the exception of the MinimOSD.

When I hook up everything as it shows in the manual, there is no image from the camera. Being that I am just getting in to this, I do not have an APM module to connect the MinimOSD to. It looks as though it should just pass information from the camera to the transmitter even without the APM connected. I am starting to think that the MinimOSD can ONLY be used with an APM module.

I got the video working great by just plugging in the camera to the transmitter and by-passing the MinimOSD altogether. I thought this would be a great starter kit with an OSD and everything I need, but now it seems I'll have to go without on-screen data until I spend another couple hundred dollars.

Can anyone confirm this for me? Is it true that the MinimOSD will only work with an APM?

Thank you in advance!

  • Your problem may be that typically the APM provides half or all of the power to the MinimOSD. No APM, no power.

When you look at the Wiki for the MinimOSD you'll see that there are two parts of the board, each requiring power. I find it easiest and safest to follow the instructions and join these two parts together by soldering the two sets of pads, one on the front and one on the back. This will power the entire MinimOSD from the APM....which you don't have. No external power needed. I suppose if you have the proper cable you could figure out which wires provide power and ground from the APM and come up with a different power source in the interim. But it still wouldn't have any data to overlay. Typically you won't have any functionality from the MinimOSD until you get an APM.
