One of the several problems I am having with my brand new Pixhawk system is compass calibration.

Here are screenshots of what my calibration wizard looks like after I have spun the plane along every axis in the way indicated by multiple youtube tutorials:

There are two possible problems I am seeing here:

1. The left compass is not centered on the axes. I have no idea what this means, but I can never get the wizard to move to the next step because it's impossible to hit the "white dots"

2. The right compass has a weird dead zone that starts as you move along the red axis. There's just a point where the compass was getting no readings at all along every axis. Is this normal?

  • This problem has been SOLVED!

It turned out to be a very simple issue that I should have thought of immediately: my airplane canopy used magnets to secure to the fuselage. It never occurred to me that teeny tiny magnets that were several inches away from the compass module would cause a problem, but oh how I was wrong. This explains why one of the compasses was "pulled" way down the red axis, and why the other compass was experiencing a complete deadzone in one direction!

I ripped the magnets out of the canopy and will stick to good 'ol tape for securing it now :)
