Plane flying backwards in HIL

Odd behavior from my HIL experiences the past two days.I have done HIL many times before but am experiencing problems now.Problem 1: APM does not arm until xplane connects.Problem 2: Once it IS all connected, heading of aircraft in MP is off by about 180 degrees. On the simulation screen, my heading and yaw line up and agree with what xplane is spitting out (in this case, 320 degrees) but in MP, the yaw and groundcourse are totally off (130-129 degrees)needless to say, this causes a lot of…See More

Eli Cohen commented on Chris Anderson's blog post AUVSI: "There's nothing unmanned about unmanned systems". Huh?
"Chris: I've worked with UAVs on both the academic research side as well as the commercial operations side and it has been a very disheartening transition. All the great research that is going on at labs around the world is lightyears ahead of…"

Eli Cohen commented on Chris Anderson's blog post AUVSI: "There's nothing unmanned about unmanned systems". Huh?
"Chris, I think they are actually right about this. Commercial UAV ops tend to be incredibly overstaffed for a number of political and other reasons. Its not the way it should be, but it is. And I have to say, I feel uncomfortable flying my personal…"

"Hey Carl How thick is that aluminum? I would imagine you would get better strength to weight just by putting a layer or two of light glass all around the airframe. you would be getting a huge boost in stiffness with very little additional weight. As…"

Profile Information

About Me:
I've been flying RC aircraft for the past 19 years (started when I was 6) and I now work designing and test flying UAVs.
Tell us a bit about your UAV interest
I am very interested in 3D printing and how it can be used for small scale UAVs to customize airframes to customer's needs.
I also am interested in long-endurance operations and am trying to do thermal detection with my Radian Pro running an APM 2.5

3D printed base for 3DR radio

Posted on February 5, 2013 at 4:22pm 7 Comments

I just designed and printed this. It snaps together in a few seconds and provides a good way for me to keep my radio pointed vertically. Seems very stable even with the longer antenna. You can find it on thingiverse if you want to print one for yourself …

Snowy first flight with Radian Pro

Posted on February 3, 2013 at 8:30am 11 Comments

First of all, sorry for the unexciting video. Waiting on my new gopro so I made do with an old keychain cam.

Flight went well! I was very impressed with the RTL performance straight out of the box. The Radian displayed much less of a tendency to wander than the 6' Telemaster I had flown with APM before. I will take a stab at tweaking the gains. This first image is just the RTL flight and the next one is all the flight data.

Before landing, the plane…

Slung Load Control with a Quadrotor

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 7:30pm 1 Comment

Just thought I would attach a video of my senior project. My partner and I used an AscTec quad to control a payload swinging underneath it. Purportedly, we were doing it to demonstrate that you could fly a helicopter and slung payload waaaay faster if you had one of these controllers running. Really, it was just a fun project. Check out the video:…
