We recently tested our Structure from Motion (SfM) and Virtual Surveying approach in a road survey scenario. The only significant manual work in the field was to survey ground control and check points. Image acquisition (with a Pixhawk equipped quad copter and a 24Mp camera) as well as SfM processsing was a highly…Continue

Yesterday, I finally felt happy enough with my first mapping experiments to share my ideas, experiences and results with you. I was a little bit apprehensive at first; the prospect of adding gps location information to a non-gps camera seemed too daunting a task for…Continue

Cemeteries use paper and old school spreadsheets to manage their land and know where to dig. But these outdated systems can lead to errors and expensive lawsuits when graves are dug in the wrong place and someone’s Rest In Peace is disturbed. PlotBox offers a SAAS for cemeteries and crematoria that helps them…
An example of the new geo-spatial products and virtual surveying and planning tools which we can bring to the farmer's kitchen table today - safely, harmlessly and economically, over and over again. All thanks to small UAVs - the new personal mapping systems. Thanks to the tremendous contributions from the DIY Drone community, small enterprises can now offer new cost saving…Continue

I took the new 3DR IRIS+ out for some mapping testing using the stock IRIS+, Gopro Hero 3 Black and DroidPlanner 2.0 running on a Nexus 7 1st Gen tablet. We also tried out the follow-me feature which seemed to work well although you should use with a gimbal for best results. Checkout the video below-

Hi, I’m in the planning stage of an ambitious project to create a website of high-resolution 3D maps of some of Colorado’s highest peaks: the 14ers. The 14ers are the 53 peaks, scattered around the state, with an elevation over 14,000’. The best maps currently available are the standard USGS topographic maps.…Continue
Just found this nice product. There are 2 versions, the Flatmap 1 and Flatmap 2.
For some reason, the FM1 has 2 axis, and the FM2 has 1 axis.
The site says they are for fixed wing, but looks like it could be…Continue
Over Thanksgiving, I planned to map out a bayou in north Louisiana, and use it as a teaching moment for high school students involved in the Drones for Schools program back in central Illinois.
Due to issues with configuration and calibration, the mission didn't go according to plan, and I didn't end up with a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of…
